The Importance of a Sphere of Influence to a Superpower
This influence, that was felt around the world, led to many wars and possibly prevented a holocaust. It was a visible defensive action and an invisible security wall. The real importance of this question is not "should" a sphere of influence be established, but "why should" a sphere be established. Is it really to protect your neighboring nations for the evil of "capitalism" or "communism," no. A sphere of influence is a cushion to soften the blow if the enemy is attacking. Nuclear war would destroy everyone nothing a sphere of influence can alter, but a conventional war, time would still be the main factor. For example, if the Americans attacked Russia and there were no spheres of influence surrounding Russia the Americans could penetrate Russian soil on the same day they attacked. Now, if the spheres of influence were surrounding Russia the story would be different, the outcome positive for Russians. Their are two positions one could take on this problem. Superpowers should or should not establish a sphere of influence in the world. A positive answers justification would be that a sphere of influence protects you from the enemy and also protects weaker nations from the threat of a hostile takeover. After the war, the United States and the Soviet Union had very different ideas on how to rebuild. The United States, led by President Truman, wanted to form democracies in Europe and create a capitalistic society to build economically strong nations that would compliment the American economy through trade. In contrast, the Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin, wanted to rebuild itself and spread communism through Europe and Asia. In a desperate attempt to rebuild, many countries devastated by war fell under soviet influence and resorted to communism. Even more complicated than Russia and even more influential in persuading Monroe and Adams that the Monroe Doctrine was necessary was the nation who had the most presence in the New World-- Spain. The Spanish colonies and territorial claims were massive spanning from Florida out to the West coast, including the Oregon territory, down through Central America and spanning almost all of the South American continent. After the wars in Europe ended, the previous King of Spain was replaced by King Ferdinand VII. Primarily, the United States foreign policy behind the Monroe Doctrine was introduced by President James Monroe in the midst of many Latin American countries gaining their independence from Spain. The doctrine stated that attempts by European countries to colonize or interfere with states in the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as acts of aggression and U.S. intervention would be necessary. The Monroe Doctrine set the precedent for various foreign policies that would result in U.S. involvement in Latin America.
Contrary to what I believed in the past, the United States federal government retained and expanded their power and authority during the years of the Civil war along with the period of Reconstruction. Through drafts and monitored elections, they exercised this power during the Civil War. Then, as Reconstruction began, they initiated other methods of increasing their authority over the citizens. Military was placed in Southern states, by the federal government, in order to keep control over the rebellious people. Not only that, but, the idea of putting the federal government in charge of Reconstruction and rebuilding an entire nation gave them an enormous amount of power. Finally, the creation of the 14th and 15th Amendment were two more big achievements on the part of the government.
Military involvement in the country’s politics has become a common feature of modern states. This history of military-government relationship traces its roots back to hundreds of years during the wars of freedom and independence. In some countries, the military is heavily involved in political affairs while others keep politics out of the military. The differences in this relationship among states arise from underlying historical factors of the modern states. This paper considers two states, Germany and Nigeria where military is heavily involved in politics owing to a long history of political warfare fuelled by ethnic pressures and economic challenges. These states are used as a reference point for military involvement in politics and the conditions under which this happens. These examples show that historical and recent conditions make the relationship between government and military very different in African and European context. In the former, weak governments are unable to control military power, while on the later, even in countries with strong military, the political leadership put limits on military power.
Congressmen have a lot of powers that they can use that are called the granted powers. These powers came from Article 8 in the Constitution. Such examples are making established Postal Roads and Post Offices, to declaring war if needed to, and making rules concerning captures on land and water. They also can maintain a navy, and regulate land and the naval forces. They control a lot of military. To fund these things that money comes from our taxes because the government can send a federal income tax. They create the flow of money by passing laws on businesses and companies.
There appears to be in the world an era of unprecedented peace. Contrary to the predictions that the end of the Cold War will bring about the fragmentation of international order and the emergence of multipolar rivalry among atomistic national units, today the world’s major powers enjoy co-operative relations and world economy is progressively liberalising and integrating. The peace and prosperity of the current era, however are sustained by the constant operation of a single factor: American relative power capability (Kupchan, 1998, p. 40).
The Main Theory Of Power A broad distinction can be made between two types of power: 1. Authority is power that is accepted as legitimate - e.g. the power of Parliament to pass laws in a society where citizens accept the political system. 2. Coercion is based upon the imposition of power using force, or the threat of force, against people who do not accept it as legitimate. Weber defines power as the ability of people to get their own way despite the opposition of others.
The United State of America is the world superpower. It is the country with the biggest muscle in the military strength. It is also among the eight richest countries in the world commonly known as (G-8). Its president has considered the president of the world and the presidency is very powerful. As powerful as it is, the decision made from the biggest office in that land, White House is not even opposed by the United Nations. Simply America is final in making decision in the world. Since smaller nations have the tendency to form alliances with more powerful nations, as powerful and wealthier countries are able to exert more political influence. Australia could utilize the position as a middle power to work with smaller countries in the region. As a result, Australia could attain a friendly relationship which will prove to be beneficial in the long term. According to Rod Lyon (2014), academic studies of was display that good relations with neighbours is essential for a peaceful regional community. Australia could contribute much to international political life if it could utilize the advantages it has as being a middle power. Some of the advantages correlate to global interest, for instance, being able to have a bigger role as a bridge between pivotal powers, contribute to the relaxation of global tension, and thus further global interest. Having adopted a middle power stand, Australia has asserted itself being a more prominent voice on global scale, hence it should take up more obligations as a relatively powerful country. America has been a world leader, since the beginning of the twentieth century, however, it is questionable, if they will continue to be world leaders. “People around the world believe the ‘global balance of power’ is shifting away from the United States… a majority of people said that China would replace, or already has replaced, the U.S as the leading superpower. This is despite the fact that the U.S has spent well over $15 billion on public diplomacy since 1999” (Cohen, Dale, Smith, 2012). Rising developing countries such as China and Russia, pose a threat to American leadership, in many ways, their power is almost equal to Americas.
We are looking at the Teachers Pyramid of Influence and how the modeling is considered to be the foundation for influencing others. Modeling is one of the biggest things that teachers do regard to teaching. In the book on page 3, it talks about how a non-smoker teacher talks about the harmful effects that would arise if you were a smoker. This can have a great influence on children when someone they respect or know says negative things about certain things. The only other influences in many of the children’s lives are their parents, and siblings. Foreign policy is the strategy where one nation develops in regards to diplomatic actions that lead the nation to reaching it national objectives. There is an undeniable fact that there has been a rise in globalization. It has become a hot topic amongst the field of international politics. With the rise of globalization, the sovereignty of the state is now being undermined. It has become an undisputed fact that the world has evolved to a new level of globalization, the transferring goods, information, ideas and services around the globe has changed at an unimaginable rate. With all that is going on, one would question how globalization has changed the system that is typically a collection of sovereign states. Do states still have the main source of power? What gives a state the right to rule a geographically defined region? It is believed by many that due to the introduction of international systems and increasing rate of globalization, the sovereignty of the state has been slowly eroded over time. My paper has two parts: First, it aims to take a close look at how globalization has changed the way the economy worked, specifically how it opened doors for multinational corporations to rise in power. Diplomacy is the practice of managing negotiations between representatives of countries or groups.
