The Importance Of Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality
Net neutrality is the ideal that no set of data being used/transmitted on the internet should be treated differently depending on who’s using it or wanting to use it. What that means is that internet service providers could charge customers to use/access certain websites or applications for a fee besides the one they pay for the initial service. It is something that would affect every single person who uses the internet and/or enjoys services such as Netflix or YouTube. This applies to computers and phones alike. It also means having the freedom to hookup your computer to any Wi-Fi, go to any website, or use any application would be taken away from consumers. If the service providers have their way then it could be seen as an infringement on consumers civil rights because it is taking away freedoms we are enjoying now such as the freedom. The fate of this issue is currently being decided between the FCC, service providers and consumers alongside internet companies. The service providers pushing for an end to net neutrality include AT&T, Version, and Comcast.
As the internet operates now consumers can buy a computer, or phone for that matter, select whichever service provider fits their needs, access the internet and use whatever website that they want. They have free access to use and do whatever they see fit as long as it is using legal devices and for legal means. These are the things that we all take for granted because that is how we the average users are accustomed to how the internet works. We have come to expect freedom from the internet.
There isn’t a cap on the amount of data that users can use either. If they want to watch Netflix 24/7 then they can. Also the user’s internet connection speeds won’t an...

With companies like YouTube and Netflix using an incredible amount of bandwidth, service providers could take advantage of that if net neutrality fails because they could stop expanding their cable lines. This would be detrimental because the internet is expanding at an exponential rate and if the lines carrying access don’t grow as well then that could drive up rates for customers and to companies to keep their place such as YouTube, Netflix, and Google. It would bog down the internet because it would create a choke point that everyone would have to go through in order to access the internet. It would make it so that whoever has the most money will have the most access.
