In life it is nice to have things that mean something. It is nice to be able to look at something and know that it is more than a physical object, that its meaning makes it more valuable. It’s meaning expands its physical boundaries and makes it into something more, because things cease to be just things when they have meaning. They become the physical embodiment of idealized thoughts. They capture what is in the mind and provide a real and tangible representation. Something with meaning by definition is something that has value, significance or purpose. However, in some instances such as mine, the meaning of an object doesn’t exist in such literal terms but rather lies in the created spaces of the mind. When I look down at this tattered piece of cloth, I can feel a sense of meaning. It is a type of meaning that stems from a lot of different places. As a Morrissey and The Smiths fan I understand how meaningful Morrissey’s shirts can be. I know how some of his fans are reduced to fighting with the aggression and determination of an ape just to catch the shirt. It is unreal. However, it is more unreal to think of a time when this won’t happen anymore. Looking at the tattered piece of cloth makes me think of a future where Morrissey won’t tour anymore and the experience of a Morrissey show will end. Younger fans will never get to experience the insanity of the encore, and they will never know what it feels like to partake in the strange adventure of capturing an older man’s shirt. My piece of his shirt grants me the opportunity to think of endless possibilities. I can image a future where my piece of cloth will be more cherished and valuable because it will be impossible to go to one of his shows. Anything is possible in the future and it is beautiful that I have something that helps me sculpt and project meaning toward that
