• AHS-3: Increase the proportion of persons with a usual primary care provider.  According to the literature, having a Primary Care Provider (PCP) is beneficial for health and wellness. Within a PCP’s practice, patients have the ability to access a wide spectrum of health services, including preventive care, acute care, and care for chronic conditions. As a future PCP, I believe is very important to coordinate patient care all in one place. This way, I really get to know my patients. Both, the number of objectives and the number of categories for organizing those objectives (“priority or focused areas”), increased with each update. In the 1990 edition, the main objectives focused only on reducing mortality and increasing independence in the older population. In the 2000 edition, in addition to increasing life span by promoting health-preventing services, one of the overarching goals has focused on preventing disparities. The 2010 and 2020 editions focus on eliminating and not just reducing disparities. Preventive services, such as routine screenings and scheduled immunizations, are essential to reducing death and disability. Since unhealthy behaviors are tied to disease incidence and mortality, I will also use Healthy People 2020 to promote healthy behaviors to improve the quality of life. I see myself: counseling my patients about regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and responsible sex behavior; assisting adults to stop smoking, minimize drinking alcohol, and stop abusing illicit drugs; and helping patients to manage and cope with their illness.
