Being Masculine To be masculine, goes way beyond just simply being born a boy. It involves the way one acts, the way one talks, the way one dresses, and just ultimately the way people perceive one another. Even the smallest of acts or gestures can distinguish people from being masculine or not. Being masculine is a concept that has been imbedded into our minds through t.v, movies, advertisements, sports, and a variety of other influential factors. There is a set standard in today’s society as to how guys are to be perceived and how women should. Boys are raised to believe they must act, dress, and do certain things in order to fit in and avoid being called “girly”. These role models are more often than not portrayed with having several different masculine traits. They can be seen as always getting the girl, having huge muscles, being heroic, and several other things. Being a kid myself, I grew up always wanting to be just like Batman. I would watch him on TV and I can remember always wanting to be as tough, brave, and charming as he was. Not once did the thought of whether or not Batman was girly, ever pop into my head. Masculinity is something that is being taught to most young men through a variety of influential factors such as sports, family, TV, church, and as well as several others. These teachings are then carried out by these young men through their actions and beliefs. Masculinity is just as big of a deal for young men, as it is for older adults. Young teens act a certain way and do certain things to avoid being called the term “fag”. The word fag does not necessarily mean one is homosexual, but many young adolescents use the word as a way to insult one another. C.J. One way it judges people is by their appearance. What one wears or how one looks can determine whether or not one is perceived as masculine. For example, a guy can not openly walk out into public wearing short shorts and a crop top without raising some major red flags. There is a set norm for the way a man should look. One thing that is known to distinguish masculinity is the thought of having manly body hair. Having a scruffy beard or mustache and a hairy chest could say that one was masculine. It was not until recently that one could be both neatly and well groomed as well as masculine. Matthew Immergut, author of the passage, Manscaping: the Tangle of Nature, Culture, and Male Body Hair, points out, “Of course we don’t have identity variables for these numbers, and therefore we might assume, as one salon owner told me with a thick Russian accent, “it’s a gay thing…gays, they have beautiful bodies but they want no hair on the body,” (Immergut 554).
