Though we seem many years away from interplanetary travel, a project called Mars One wishes to establish a colony of humans on Mars by 2026. They plan to send a crew of four on a one-way craft every 26 months. An important factor in the success of these missions are the people selected to live on Mars and their influence on this new society. They should have traits that will benefit and sustain the colony on Mars. Therefore, the four individuals selected should display traits of resourcefulness and adaptability. They should also be able to work well with each other.
Resourcefulness is the ability to deal and cope with difficult situations and find solutions. Resourcefulness is linked with creativity because to fix a problem, one might need to find a solution that is new. A resourceful person looks beyond the instruction manual and into his own knowledge and experiences. In the novel The Martian by Andy Weir, the protagonist, Mark Watney is stranded on Mars. It is important for astronauts to adapt both physically and psychologically. Universe Today, an astronomy site, states that “Mars is a completely hostile environment to human life, combining extreme cold with an unbreathable atmosphere and intense radiation” (Williams). However, people cannot simply decide to be more resistant to the radiation or adapt to be able to the thin carbon dioxide atmosphere of Mars. The real test of adaptability is being able to adapt to the completely different lifestyle of Mars. It is completely different from life on Earth. If something breaks, you cannot call someone to fix it or go to a hardware store. People who are adaptable can also make the best out of a bad situation.
