The Home Coming – Conflict There are many types of conflicts in The Home Coming, one type of conflict is person vs. person when Becky gets on her sister and brothers and agrees with her mother. Person vs. person is when a character must overcome her own nature or make a choice between two or more paths—good and evil; logic and emotion, or when the characters struggle takes place in her mind. Person vs. Society is another conflict because Clay-Boy went to the church to hopefully find his father but when he walked in the church he saw the black people having church and he was worried or confused because he had never came in contact with blacks and they it was not what he had been told or taught about what a black church had been like. Simmel’s theory of conflict may be applied to the residents in “Two Towns of Jasper” because the murder of James Byrd Jr. had created conflict of racism and forced the town to examine their collective identity. The theory of conflict explains conflict as a form of interaction, more beneficial way to bring people in one society together, and a necessary for societal change. The benefits of a conflict are promoting growth in a society, resolving issues, and innovation. “Two Towns of Jasper” demonstrates that the conflict that arises from the murder of James Byrd Jr. brings the citizens of Jasper to recognize the racial differences that are occurring and resolve these issues in order to prevent future problems. Caucasians and African-Americans come together and view the murderers as common enemies which heightened the solidarity among the two groups.
One's identity is a very valuable part of their life, it affects the Day to day treatment others give them which can lead to how the individual feels emotionally. Atticus, defending Tom Robinson, who is an african american man from the plaintiff of the case, Mayella Ewell, who is a caucasian woman, accusing that Tom raped her is supposivly a lob sided case. During the great depression, any court session that contained a person of color against a caucasian would always contain the “white” individual winning the case. The cause of the bias outcome comes from the lawyer of the african american does not try to defend or the jury goes against the person of color simply because their black, this shows the effect of racism to anyone’s identity in the courtroom for a case simply because of race. Imagine living in a society where the color of your skin defines who you are. In Harper Lee’s Novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Maycomb County is surrounded in ignorance because people believe that people of a certain color are not as important as everyone else. An individual, Tom Robinson is attacked, and judged by Maycomb’s society because of false rape accusations and the color of his skin. The power of Atticus’s words show society that they were wrong about Tom because the color of his skin does not define who he is and being black does not make him a rapist. The three most important themes in To Kill a Mockingbird are knowledge versus ignorance, individual versus society, and power of words.
A small African-American boy sees his friend in the park, but can't spend time with him because they are not the same skin color. Maybe his parents did not want everyone in the town knowing that they were letting their child play with white folk, or he was afraid of what his parents would say if they were getting along, regardless of what the rest of the town thinks. Little did this boy know that he would soon be accused of a crime he never committed. This was the life of those with a different skin color in the 1930s. The Saints have the have because they could get out of class any time they wanted and have the wealth of their parents to keep them out of trouble. The treatment they were observed by Chambliss is that the police never arrested them for their wrongdoings. The Saints were the biggest trouble makers that should have gotten trouble then the Roughnecks. They in having money had power over the people. The evidence that is seen is the Saints had cars so they could escape the town to be deviant without being caught and always changed their places they would mess with the roads, speed, or drive while intoxicated. To Kill a Mockingbird revolves around human behavior and the boundaries that it facilitates. The boundaries of the quiet little town of Maycomb, Alabama are constantly tested by the games that people play. In each game, distinctions evolve. The distinctions become the rules of the game, of life, and from them, different boundaries form for each new character. With each new drama, characters and distinctions change, as do the boundaries which form them.

In the movie, the conflict theory was the black community verses the white community. For example, in the movie, Vernon Johns decided to enter a restaurant that was labeled whites only.
