The Author

John Ronald Reuel (J.R.R) Tolkien as was born on January 3rd

1892. Apart from his long and distinguished academic career, he is

best known for his extraordinary works of fiction "The hobbit", "The

lord of the rings" and "The Silmarilion". His works are translated

into over 24 languages and sold many millions of copies worldwide. He

was awarded the CBE (?), and an honorary Doctorate of letters from

Oxford University in 1972. He died in 1973 at the age of 81. "The

hobbit", along with "The lord of the rings", and "The Silmarilion",

was an atempt to create a mythology - like bookseries. The style and

mood of the books are very much influenced by other mythologies and

legends from around the world.

The Story

It all begins in a little hole in the ground. Bilbo had just eaten his

first breakfast and is about to start on his second. Suddenly the

great wizard named Gandalf enters the front door. He says Bilbo is

about to go on a great journey with lots of adventures. Bilbo doesn't

want to go on any journey. Gandalf leaves and says he will come back.

The next day somebody knocks on Bilbo's door, he opens and there

stands a dwarf. He introduces himself as Dwalin and entres Bilbo's

home as he was expected. After a while it knocks again and there is

another dwarf. He introduces himself just like the first dwarf, Balin

was his name. That afternoon a total number of 12 dwarfs came knocking

on Bilbo's door. In addition Thorin and Gandalf also came knocking on

the door, entering the house, and acting like they were at home. As

any hobbit Bilbo hosted his company good. Gandalf persuaded Bilbo to

join him, Thorin and the dwarfs on an adventure filled with exitement

and danger. Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and the other dwarfs Dwalin, Balin,

Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bafur and Bombur sets

off for the adventure.

Bilbo's part in the journey is to be a burgler, his job is to trick,

sneak, steal and break in to places.

The real goal with their quest is to defeat the evil dragon Smaug the

magnificent, retrieve the lost dwarwen castle and to collect the gold

and treasures Smaug protects. On their journey they meet goblins,

orcs, trolls, elves and the mysterius creature Gollum. They travel

over hills, mountains and rivers to achive their goal.

What is a hobbit?

They are small people, about half our height, and smaller than the

bearded dwarfs. They have no beard. There is no magic about them,

    The partial remains of a skeleton belonging to a tiny female hominid that lived around 95K to 17Kya, was found in the Liang Bua cave on the island of Flores in Indonesia in 2003. This skeleton has unique traits. It has small body approximately 3’6” in length and an estimated body weight of 66 lbs. The 426 cc brain capacity led scientists to taxa the skeleton to a new species they called Homo floresiensis. Since the initial find, teeth and bones from as many as twelve H. floresiensis remains have been discovered at the Liang Bua cave which is the only known site where H. floresiensis has been found to date. This is the most recently discovered early human species so far. They had large teeth for their small size, they had no chins, their foreheads are receded, and they had relatively large feet in proportion to the short legs. Although they are small in body and brain size, H. floresiensis did make and use of stone tools. They hunted small elephants and large rodents. They had island predators such as giant Komodo dragons, and even may have used fire. However, arguments rising in the anthropology community and scientific world are questioning if the now nick named: “Hobbit”, of Flores Island, is the same species as modern day humans. Are they Homo species, or Homo sapiens with the medical condition called Cretinism? A severe hypothyroidism resulting in physical and mental stunting.

    C.S Lewis is the author of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Warrdrobe. Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland. As a child, he was disappointed with the Christian faith, but when he became older he found himself embracing Christianity. During World War II, he gave popular radio broadcasts on Christianity and they won many converts. Lewis’ speeches were collected in Mere Christianity. In the year of 1954, C.S. Lewis joined the staff of Cambridge University as a literature professor. He met an English teacher by the name of Joy Gresham and in 1956 they married each other and became a happily married family. The two were joyful during their marriage; unfortunately in 1960, the wife became ill with cancer died. Lewis began publishing his works in the mid- 1920s. Lewis started to publish The Chronicles of Narnia during the 1950s. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was the first in the seven book series to be released. This was the story of four siblings who discovered a wardrobe with a magical land in the back of it (“Clives…”). In The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Lewis describes Aslan, Edmund, and Lucy.
