Facing evil orcs, savage wolves, and giant spiders, with unknown dangers Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit faces an unparalleled experience that may or may not endanger his life. The book The Hobbit written by J.R.R Tolkien and directed by Peter Jackson is about a Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who is unpretentious, settled, and has great manners who wanted to be left at his quiet comfortable home. Yet Bilbo is greeted one day by a wizard named, Gandalf, who introduces Bilbo to thirteen other dwarves for a chance to go on a once and a lifetime adventure. The movie directed by Peter Jackson has many flaws that make the movie less effective compared to the book. While Thorin disappears, but still appears as a lead role from afar, but in the end of the movie the roles are switched. For instance, “‘Nonsense!’” said Thorin recovering his dignity...Already they had come to respect little Bilbo. Now he become the real leader in their adventure” (Tolkien 218-221). This quote represent, how Bilbo starts to take charge and direct the group of dwarves that accompany him along the way. Hence the dwarves develop a respect for Bilbo, as you can see from the quote, “Already they had come to respect little Bilbo” (Tolkien 221). From this Bilbo started to truthfully shine and show his true leadership and how far he's come in the hero's journey. Tolkien’s intent for Bilbo’s breakthrough for finally showing his true leadership is because every great heroic story has to show the development of how far the hero has come. In this case being Bilbo, creating a brave, wise, young Bilbo from a humble unpretentious hobbit. At the same time though, the movie begins to mislead you to think that Bilbo may be the hero but then plot twists the storyline to Thorin becoming the hero. Thus changing the storyline showing that Bilbo hasn’t matured as a character as much as he did in the book. In a way creating suspense in the books because Bilbo and the dwarves waited longer to try to escape while the movie didn't include them asleep. Specifically, “By day we can no doubt creep out safely enough to take the air… The sun is shining when he started”(Tolkien 221).By making the dwarves and Bilbo take a rest or sleeping, the book created more suspense making the reader await for the action to come. In the movie Peter Jackson did not incorporate the dwarves taking a rest and sleeping because it was a fast paced movie which made it go straight to the action. Such as, When Bilbo breaks into Smaug’s “palace” for the second time it jumps straight into action. Instead of holding off to make the audience more excited and interested for what is to come next. The screen is displayed to show the action by using a long shot to get a great view of the movie jumping strait into the action instead of waiting to build up suspense. The movie during this scene demonstrates the long shot so you could view the action between Smaug, the dwarves, and Bilbo while they were fighting. Peter Jackson could have not included the dwarves sleeping or taking a rest because he set the movie at a fast pace adding in more scenes that were not it the book to make the movie more entertaining.
