Characters: protagonists: Bilbo Baggins- he is the main character of story. The tiny hobbit is convinced by the great wizard Gandalf to undertake a long journey with thirteen dwarves to help them retrieve their lost treasure. Bilbo, at first, seems to be of no use to the dwarfs, almost getting them killed by the giant trolls. Eventually he shows his value to dwarves by saving them numerous times from death and imprisonment. Thorin- He is the most important dwarf.
They are saved by Gandalf, who sets the trolls squabbling amongst themselves until daybreak, when they are all turned to stone. Gandalf returns and occupies the trolls till dawn, and then they turn into stone. The group takes the two swords and a knife the trolls were carrying. The travelers come across the Secret Valley.

As Bilbo puts the ring on and Gollum runs right past him. Bilbo realizes that the ring makes him invisible, and his whole life as the dwarves’ burglar changes. He uses the ring to help the dwarves escape the spiders and the wood elves. It also helps him when he goes into the den of Smaug. Without the power of the ring to aid him, Bilbo and the dwarves would have been killed fairly early in the story.

With the aid of Gandalf and Bilbo he seeks regain his treasure and the throne.
Bilbo’s first test begins with the company losing their ponies due to trolls and him attempting to rescue them. The dwarves end up captured and he uses his quick thinking to delay the trolls until the sun rises. This is his first trail with the company which begins their bond for the rest of the movie, though his mentor Gandalf does not show up till the very end to help. As they continue their journey, Bilbo faces Gollum, another enemy, and defeats him in a battle that leaves Bilbo with a magic ring. The magic ring is a helpful object in this movie, as it allows him to disappear from danger and having possession of it allows Bilbo to help save the company multiple times.
