The History of Crystal Methamphetamine: Amphetamine was found before methamphetamine. It was first created in 1887 in Germany by Romanian chemist Lazăr Edeleanu. It was then called phenylisopropylamine. In 1919, methamphetamine hydrochloride was manufactured by pharmacologist Akira Ogata viareduction by using red phosphorus and iodine. Today, methamphetamine is sold under the name Desoxyn. Facts about Crystal Methamphetamine: • Crystal methamphetamine lifts the users mood, as well as increases energy levels • It can last from six to eight hours, and can sometimes last up to twenty-four hours. • Crystal Meth is a potent neurotoxin. • The classes within crystal meth are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity. • Methamphetamine hydrochloride is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) under the trade name Desoxyn. Statistics: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimated that the worldwide production of amphetamine-type stimulants, which includes methamphetamine, is about 500 metric tons per year, and there are apparently 24.7 million abusers. 4.5% of American high-school seniors and 4.1% of grade 10 students said they had used crystal meth at least once in their life in 2007 In 2008 roughly 13 million people aged 12 and over have used methamphetamine. Regular users were about 529,000 out of those 13 million The percentage of rehabilitation admissions due to methamphetamine rose from 3% in 1996 to 9% in 2006. States such as Hawaii have a higher percentage of people seeking help (48.2%) because of methamphetamine abuse.
