The Great Gatsby (Chapters 4-5) THE DISCUSSION DIRECTOR In these two chapters we learn some new information about Gatsby’s background. Do you believe he is telling the truth this time or lying? I think that Gatsby is lying about some things and telling the truth about others. For example, when he tells Nick that he went to Oxford he acted weird, he rushed through the words and choked on them. This hints that he might be lying. On the other hand, he also told Nick that all his family had died and he inherited a great deal of money. Nick said by the solemn look on Gatsby’s face he believed it was true. However, later when showing Daisy his house Gatsby mentioned that it took him three years to come up with enough money to buy it. Earlier on he had said that he inherited a lot of money from his family so why would he need to work so hard to earn the money. Will we ever find out the truth about Gatsby? Or will he remain a mystery forever? Why do you think Gatsby has so many parties with such a large amount of guests? I think Gatsby threw extravagant parties in hopes of having Daisy someday come to one of them. His parties were very popular and known about everywhere, people usually just showed up without an invitation. Gatsby wanted to get Daisy’s attention with his parties and hopefully she would show up and they could meet again. If she did come to one of his parties he wanted to show her how successful and wealthy he was, he was good enough for her and would take care of her properly. In addition I think he was very lonely. He mentioned to Nick that his whole family died and he had no one left, whether that was the truth or another lie we do not know for sure. However, imagine how lonely he might be. He lives in a huge house all b... ... middle of paper ... ...hat is the weather like on the day that Daisy and Gatsby meet again? Why did Fitzgerald choose to do this? Like Shakespeare, Fitzgerald chose to have the weather reflect the mood, this is called pathetic fallacy. When Gatsby was anxious and nervous on the day of Daisy’s arrival it was pouring rain. He was scared to meet her again so the weather was dark and gloomy. However, when Nick left Daisy and Gatsby alone he went outside and described the change in weather, it went from rainy to sunny. He entered his house, and found that the atmosphere in the room and around Gatsby was different, they had made up. Nick informed them that it had stopped raining and Gatsby happily repeated it to Daisy who in turn said, “I’m glad Jay.” This shows that when the tension between Daisy and Gatsby diffused and they had rekindled their old spark, the sun made a sudden appearance.
