Recently there has been an increase in movie adaptations of popular books. Novels from new teen fiction to classics are finding their way on screen. When the public hears their favorite book is being brought to life by Hollywood, excitement swells inside them. When the movie is revealed however the fans are let down because the story line has been altered in some way. Sometimes the sequence of events is out of order, an awesome scene is eliminated , or the cast just does not live up the characters in the original. The audience is constantly disappointed. They can't understand why Hollywood would mess up a story that is literally written for them. While many people believe that directors and screenwriters are unjustified in altering the movie, they actually have many reasons for making changes in the adaptation.
One of the leading reasons why screenwriters change up the story line of a novel is because the book is simply too long to include everything. If a movie followed the book exactly, the finished product would be much to long for an audience to view in one sitting. Writers will often take out parts that are irrelevant. Mario Puzo is the author of a popular novel called The Godfather. When the movie adaptation was release fans of the book noticed a few parts were missing. In most cases this would cause disappointment but many of the fans agreed that the movie was significantly improved by deleting useless scenes. Sometimes the writer will delete a scene that would make the main character unappealing to the audience. Gone With The Wind was changed for this reason. Critics say that Nicholas Sparks' novel The Notebook possessed intensity that the book did not, making the movie far better in some minds. Warm Bodies as a film was able to convey feeling that could not be put in words. This is caused by the fact zombie don't talk much and drag their words when they do speak. The audio of a movie conveys the speech better.
Until the death of all literature, books will continue to be turned into movies. These movies will continue to either make or break the original tales. No matter how hard a screenwriter tries he or she will never satisfy the audience because every reader, every fan has their own ideas about how something should happen. The writers will do their best but some changes have to be made. Every writer has a reason for the changes made.
