A single generation consists of every person born within about a twenty year period. The three generations currently living on the planet are the baby boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y, also known as millennials . Baby boomers are the oldest generation still living. They are people born some time between 1940 to 1960 (Newman). This generation is the generation of folks who fought in World War II. After returning home from war, there was a great surge in population in the United States, hence the name Baby Boomers. Their children, Generation X, were born between the early 1960’s to the early 1980’s (Newman). This generation can also be known as the Post-World War II generation. The last generation, children of Generation X, are known as millennials. Millennials are the largest generation of young people the planet has seen, born between the early 1980’s to the early 2000’s (Newman). Currently, there are around 75-80 million millennials, while there are only 48 million Gen Xers (Newman). Millennials have lived through the technology revolution. Because of this revolution, millennials are stereotyped as lazy and narcissistic young people who do not care about anything outside of their Facebook page (Goudreau). Other stereotypes are that millennials are uninterested in politics, and expect everything to be handed to them without putting in any work. In actuality, there are many factors working against millennials success. They were left with a crumbling economy from previous generations. This crumbling economy lead to a distrust in government for Generation Y. Millennials are not lazy or narcissistic, they were just left with horrible circumstances that work against their success. Twenty-six percent have stopped using some form of their social networks all together (“How Millennials Use and Control Social Media”). Clearly, millennials are changing the way they control and use social media. Millennials get a bad rap from older generations. Older generations do not see millennials as more than technology addicted young people. In actuality, young people are so much more than that. They had to job search in a crumbled economy. They also have to fight against a corrupt government system. Despite this, millennials remain optimistic that they will find success and fix the economy. They think of themselves as capable and strive for success, which some mistake as narcissism. Millennials are not raging narcissists who expect everything to be handed to them. They are a blooming generation of young people who want to make big changes in the world.
