What is the GPI? The GPI is essentially an assessment of individual experiences and development of global perspective (Braskamp, & Engberg, 2011). It was originally pilot tested in 2007, and has gone through at least 9 versions to date, tested on students entering college, study abroad students, graduating seniors, faculty, and graduate students. There are now three forms of the test: the General Student Form for current and study abroad students, the New Student Form, and the Study Abroad Post Test Form. While it is predominately used at universities to assess student experiences, it is meant to be useable in any context, and designed so anyone can complete the survey. Potential uses range from, but are not limited to, study abroad, international student orientation, service learning, and freshmen-to-senior gains (Braskamp, Braskamp, & Engberg, 2014). The GPI has been compared to the BEVI and IDI at Michigan State University (MSU) in terms of what each assesses, how they were used, strengths and limitations. According to MSU, the GPI assesses student outcomes and experiences in the curriculum, co-curriculum, and community, and helps educators improve learning experiences. It was piloted at MSU with students in a multi-racial living and learning community. Strengths were that it is “based in student development theory and uniquely suited for assessment at the undergraduate level,” it is short, “cross-institutional comparisons and norms are available,” it is relatively inexpensive, and allows for the addition of institute specific items. Weaknesses to consider are it being value based, purely quantitative, and mostly only useful at the group level (Roy, Wandschneider, & Steglitz, 2014,
