On October 29, 1929, the stock market crashed and the US went through one of its hardest times. This difficult time was known as the great depression and US citizens were facing unemployment, poverty, and hunger. The President during the beginning of this time period (1929-39) was Herbert Hoover (1929-33), his plan was a “hand’s off” policy in which the government wasn’t largely involved in the situation. Hoover raised taxes and had many failed attempts at helping (encouraging the opening of soup kitchens and big businesses to help) but overall, this only allowed the economy to fall even more and US citizens to go through a hard time period. The main purpose was to produce a series of guidebooks that would be named “American Guide.” The series would focus on a scenic, historical, cultural and economic resources of the US. The Federal Writer’s Project was directed by Henry Alsberg, a former lawyer who became interested in theater as a writer and as a director. Alsberg makes up most of the letters in the collection of works. Along with some associates, Marle Colby, George Cronin, Joseph Gaer, Reed Harris and Claire Laning, who were also a part of the Federal Writers Project. The FWP was from around 1935-1942 and the writings were about rural and urban folklore. This included “individual narratives and life histories; studies of customs of social and ethnic groups; source materials regarding African Americans; testimony of ex-slaves and slave-related material including copies of purchase agreements and sale advertisements.” (Library of Congress) After spending too much public money, the Federal Writer’s Project had to reduce personnel and make some administrative changes. The Federal Writer’s Project took place around all the US and states like North Carolina. Some of the works produced were very personal and emotional. During the great depression, US citizens felt discouraged and upset by the circumstances around them. The WPA gave them hope for a better life where they weren’t unemployed and would have a decent meal. Hope was one of the short term effects the Federal Writer’s Project gave US citizens. After hiring many writers to work for the project, the employees were given the liberty of expressing how they felt through narratives and other different styles of writings. The narratives were meant to reflect the ordinary person's struggle while also explaining the contrast of their daily living. Expression was one of the long term effects given to US citizens as they continue to express themselves today. In 1942, the Federal Writer’s Project shut down because there was no need for it anymore. World War 2 had begun and many new jobs were opening and this brought down unemployment rates
