Since 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell conducted the first full coherent sentence over telephone, communication devices have continued to rapidly evolve and in turn, changing the way we behave. These changes are evident when we look at the similarities and differences of perspectives and behaviours within generations. This essay will uncover the social changes through generations X and Z at the age of 17 and their uses of phones and their opinions on them by discussing the changes in communication, behavioral standards, peer relationships and socialisation and the attitudes towards elders. Websites like ‘Pew Research Centre- Internet & Technology’ (Smith, 2012) created by Aaron Smith that will present factual information on “the impact of mobiles on peoples lives”. As well as using a recent interview conducted with a Gen (generation) X reflecting back to their use of telephones technology when they were seventeen. This primary and secondary research will allow this essay to uncover the effects of telephone technology on both Generation X and Generation Z. Mobile phones caused no problems to generation Z’s parent’s, simply due to them not having them. Information wasn’t at the touch of a button for generation X, unlike generation Z, so they relied on their parents and teachers to answer their questions as teenagers. As stated by a generation X reflecting on generation Z’s and their relationship with parents, “Parents now don’t have that control over what you know because you can google anything now. It’s changed that parent and child relationship, you don’t need to come to us for as much advice anymore” (Walters, 2018).
