Slavery Slavery can be found from the beginning of time, and the history of slavery in Africa clearly shows this. It started with Indigenous slavery and then Islamic slavery followed. These two were less harsh than the slavery that surfaced around the 15th century. This new and brutal slavery was never seen before in Africa and it disrupted the society greatly. Humans were thrown into triangular trade like they were nothing more than an animal or piece of property. Many people question why slavery ended, and economical reasons and the morals are the two main causes. It is more pleasing to suggest that it has been ended due to morals, but there is evidence it was ended for economical reasons.

These numbers are high and it shows how the societies were affected in Africa. Most of the time there was more women than men in Africa because plantation owners wanted strong male men. The idea of polygamy arose due to the distorted numbers.
Olaudah Equiano wrote a novel about slavery and opened the eyes of many oblivious people around the world. His book was very powerful and it served to help during the abolition movement. He believed that the experience of the middle passage was completely demoralizing to Africans (Andrea 195). Referring to his experience, he writes, “I now wished for the last friend, death, to relieve me”. He changed peoples mind as he went deeper and deeper into the details of horrible things encountered during the Atlantic Slave Trade. He also informed readers if the slaves needed to go to the bathroom they would have to do so as they lay there. If the person above you went, their defecates would seep through the boards and land below. As the Atlantic Slave Trade was booming, the crew members started to take better care of the slaves knowing the more they brought back, the more money they would make.
