The word danger probably makes you want to turn away and stop doing whatever it is that you are doing. Well, what do you do when you see the words, “The Danger of a Single Story?” These words had me nervous about what I was going to be watching. However, there was a lot of information that was explained throughout this 20-minute TED talk from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This paper will explore compelling ideas she mentioned that relate to things I have experienced when I went to another culture, the risks of telling a single story narrative in intercultural interactions, ways to protect myself from single story misconceptions, and how I was able to see how a single story might affect the way I communicate with others in different cultures. …show more content…

One risk when we tell these single stories is the idea of stereotypes. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but they are incomplete.” This being said, the single story only tells one side of a story. The single story has a limited viewpoint because it is from one person and not from the eyes of many different people. I also agreed with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's idea about how single stories can create a misunderstanding between the individuals in conversation. The person from one culture might have a certain slang that the other person had never heard, and if there is no other person describing the story there might be a misunderstanding involved. One of my suitemates last year is from Uganda and so sometimes when she would tell stories I would envision this idea about the place she was describing. I have never been to Africa so the image I created in my head has been in a sense close-minded. I had this idea about this place that I had no idea about until the past year. A single story loses the idea of experience and uses only a story to create mental pictures. After learning about single stories, it makes me regret some of the conversations I had in the past because I can see how I was close-minded to the ideas of how her culture is different than the one I have always grown up
