Sexual abuse is when someone in a position of power or authority takes advantage of a person’s trust and respect to involve them in sexual activity (What is sexual assault and sexual abuse?, n.d.). Sexual abuse can happen to anyone regardless of gender and age. Sexual abuse includes passing on sexual diseases, toys, unwanted physical pain, refusal to use contraception, without consent. Child sexual abuse can be defined as any sexual act towards a child that is performed by an adult or even an older child. Child sexual abuse includes: • Sexually touching any part of a child’s body whether they have cloths on or not. • Engaging in any type of sexual activity in front of a child. • Encouraging a child to engage in masturbation or any other type …show more content…

If someone has been sexually assaulted they may experience a wide range of emotions. This is perfectly normal considering what they have experienced. The impact of this assault can be short term or long term and can affect each person in a different way. Children who have been sexually assaulted have a higher levels of depression, self-blame, eating disorders, guilt, anxiety, shame, sexual problems, denial, and relationship problems. Depression is the most common long-term system among those who have been sexually abused. Victims of sexual abuse have a hard time dealing with the abuse and will think negatively about themselves. These feelings turn into worthlessness, and the victim will avoid others. Depression can lead to suicidal thoughts, disturbed sleeping patterns, and disturbed eating patterns. Victims may also experience the feeling of guilt, shame, and self-blame. These victims of sexual abuse often take personal responsibility for the abuse. When a trusted adult has committed the sexual abuse it is hard for the child to view the perpetrator in a negative light. Victims are most likely to have body image problems that are associated with feeling dirty, ugly, not happy with their body or appearance, obesity, and eating disorder. Stress and anxiety is another long-term effect. Sexual abuse is very frightening to a child and can cause stress for a long period of time. These victims may also experience anxiety attacks, phobias, tension, and chronic anxiety. Being sexually assaulted is very traumatizing to a child and can lead to post traumatic stress disorder. As these children get older they may have difficulty in establishing interpersonal relationships. The most common relationship difficulty that a victim may experience is trust, fear of being weird, fear of intimacy, passive behaviors, establishing interpersonal boundaries, and getting involved in an abusive relationship. When the sexual assault has been committed by someone that they love, the trust for them has been broken.
