Different Reactions of Individuals Who’ve Been Wronged When people are done wrong or have had wrongdoings done to them, they usually have some type of initial reaction. These reactions depend entirely on the person and their experiences. In the stories “The Cask of Amontillado” and “Thank You, Ma’am,” both of the main characters had been a victim of wrongdoings but how their reactions are totally different. In the story “The Cask of Amontillado,” a man named Montresor had been hurt and wronged by a man named Fortunato. Because of these wrongs, Montresor suffered but he declared he would get his revenge and make Fortunato pay. To get his revenge, he tricked Fortunato, who was a drunk, into drinking more wines, in hopes he would get to drink a cask of Amontillado. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was a woman who was a victim of attempted robbery. While she was walking, a young man by the name of Roger attempted to snatch her pocketbook but fell when the strap broke. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones proceeded to grab the boy by his shirt and ask him what was wrong with him and why was he so dirty. When he responded that he had no one to go home to or look after him, she lead him to her house where she fed him and even allowed him to wash-up. She even shared her life story with him and gave him advice about life, which made Roger feel as if someone cared about him. In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Montresor made up in his mind that he would carry out his act of revenge on Fortunato. Whatever offense Fortunato committed against Montresor drove him to the brink. The hatred inside was somewhat poetic. Montresor schemed to every detail how to carry out his revenge. The setting of the story is a dark, gloomy night at a celebration during carnival season. Montresor would be detailed in describing the monetary status of his enemy, his wardrobe or costume he wore to the celebration. He would set the mood as cheerful. Despite the ill feelings he has towards the now drunken Fortunato, Montresor pretends to care for his company to lure him towards his cunning plan. The Cask of Amontillado is an eloquent story narrated from the murderer’s point of view. Montressor seeks revenge against Fortunato for numerous insults the reader can only imagine. In order to determine the severity of the apparent injustices, Fortunato himself must be understood. Montressor describes him as being “rich, respected, admired, [and] beloved,” as well as “a man to be … feared” (Poe 274-276). Fortunato was a flawed individual, however. His greatest imperfection was his love for wine. Fortunato’s “connoisseurship” (274) of wine resulted in his intoxicated state throughout the short story. His physical and mental capacities were impaired by his drunkenness, and as a result, he was unable to resist Montressor’s lure into the catacombs.
He uses the precise and cunning tactics to seek revenge against his acquaintance, Fortunato, but wishes to do so in a clever way that he will not get caught. He tells Fortunato that he has obtained a wine that could be Amontillado, but he does not invite Fortunato into his home. He knows Fortunato would never pass up an opportunity to test his intelligence knowledge of wine. By that way, Montresor can complete his plan without putting himself responsible.

A surface reading of that story reveals only a simple description by Montresor (the narrator) of how he kills another man who was called, ironically, Fortunato. Montresor exploits Fortunato's vanity concerning the connoiseurship of wine; specifically, Montresor pretends to want a wine cask of Amontillado verified as genuine. Montresor chooses a time when Fortunato is drunk to dupe him into going down the spiral stairs into the catacombs, which serve as a sort of family burial grounds for the race of Montresors. But rather than a mere cask of wine, Fortunato finds his death; for Montresor bricks him into a niche of the catacombs which has remained undisturbed for the fifty years since the murder was performed. Montresor seeks revenge because of the direct actions that may have caused thousands of people's’ injuries. Even though Montresor does not impose cruel punishment to be done to Fortunato, he would want to have a punishment with impunity (lines 1-8). Most of the words used in the first paragraphs of the story imply direct hate towards Fortunato and to make the story seem more sinister. These words that were imposed by Montresor made the intro to the story and the plot of the story thicken with suspense.

Unlike “The Tell Tale Heart” were the narrator loved the old man just hated his eye, the narrator of “The Cask of Amontillado” hated Fortunato but did things that make it look like he loved him. Montresor approaches Fortunato with claiming to have acquired something that could pass for Amontillado. Here Montresor may seem like he is being nice but he really just using Fortunato’s love for wine against him.
