The dark sky shadows our new planet. Earth, that you once knew, is no more. Now, your home is Utopia. After the war of Freedom the world that was once known changed. In so areas, the air had become so polluted that breathing without assistance was just an imaginary concept from the 90s. Some say things like the UN and NASA actually exist, but those are just the crazy ones. You on the other hand seem to be stuck in the middle of understanding this cold, dark world. You never left the borders of your home. No one did. No one knew of what was beyond the boundaries of Utopia. Education and health care was never an issue, nor was the worry of people going home without any food, but everyone was forced to work under the same people for generations and for generations to come. However, this does seemly beat the idea of anyone getting the power to rule, and own giant corporations but half the population is in poverty, and aren’t getting educated while spending two-thirds of their income on health care. You love your home, but one time you came across a book from the 70s. It was a home design book, that should have been burned ten years ago, but miraculously survived. Involuntarily, humans want, or in some cases need, to live in an utopian world. Calypso, a nymph and a goddess in Greek mythological times, was lucky enough to live in one of these perfect societies, even though it was short-lived. An author states in her online article, “She is a Goddess with several functions, a complex character, and as an individual she represents the dual nature of the feminine as both light and dark in a subtle, integrated/harmonious/in accordance way” (LeVan, par. 2). Her life was made complete by means of Odysseus, a mortal who washed onto the island and later became her prisoner. Calypso’s utopian world of godliness, control, order, and power was shattered due to Athena and Zeus commanding Odysseus be freed. When Athena and Zeus ordered Calypso to free Odysseus from imprisonment, they ruined her utopian life-style.

Imagine a world with no crime, greed or poverty. In the past, many people have had the same dream and have strived to achieve a perfect world. The specticality of society’s thoughts on a perfect world made it difficult to achieve this. However, with religion at the side of the majority of these early perfect cultural dreamers, the idea of an utopia was created. A religious or secular community, forming a community life inspired by religion is the exact definition of a utopia today (“Utopian Societies”). But like many old day ideas, the idea of a perfect society was quickly ignored. However, Despite the cultural changes made throughout the ages, utopias have kept their original core beliefs through dedication, isolation from society, and their lasting effects on other communal societies.
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margret Atwood takes place in a government imposed “utopia” with strict rules and constant surveillance, however; the system is anything but perfect. This utopia fails because it does not recognize that human nature demands a means of self expression. The lack of freedom to love whom you want, dress how you want, or create what you want leads this society to corruption and self destruction. With the deprivation of choice, people are no longer human. Virtually every decision a person makes is in an attempt to express their character, it may be in the clothes they wear or the music they listen to, but ultimately everyone just wants to be loved and understood. The text Utopia was written by Sir Thomas Moore in 1516, just before the outbreak of the Reformation. More’s life flourished through the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which were influential years in the Renaissance, a flowering of art and thought that began in Italy and flooded through Europe and England. Humanists often stressed the dignity of man and the power of reason while remaining deeply committed to Christianity. Their thought and writings helped to break the strict religious orthodoxy that had forced itself through the Middle Ages. Humanists often argued against feudalism as it promoted a society dominated by the rich and unfair on everyone else. Further, they saw feudal society as irrational.

Sir Thomas More first used this word; he was born in 1478 in London, England and came to be one of the most influential figures of the early Renaissance. Not only did he work as a lawyer but he was also a well respected philosopher and historian as well as writer. In 1516, Moore wrote Utopia, a book based off of fiction and political philosophy. Utopia has been with us since the beginning of time – all religions for example has an idea of a perfect place; the Garden of Eden and paradise are examples within the Catholic religion. When Moore first created the word for a book entitles Utopia, the word itself is derived for the Greek ju meaning ‘no’ and toʊpiə meaning ‘place’ therefore the literal translation would be ‘no place.’ However, it could also mean ‘good place’ as eu(topia) means good(place). This idea of no place and good place juxtapose each other and also arise the concept of an ‘ideal’ place being elsewhere – out of the reach of human beings – or just does not exist.

Imagine a society where every citizen was content with their lives. This society is stable, equal, crimeless, and perfect. However, could you imagine the price that’s being paid for this so called perfect society or some might call it a utopia. What might seem as a perfect environment is actually quite the opposite, rather a dystopia. “Fifty States of Fear” by Peter Ludlow, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley , and “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, in these three stories they all depict a dystopian environment with features such as sacrifice for the good of everyone. Thomas More’s Utopia and Aldus Huxley’s Brave New World , are novels about societies that differ from our own. Though the two authors have chosen different approaches to create an alternate society, both books have similarities which represent the visions of men who were moved to great indignation by the societies in which they lived. Both novels have transcended contemporary problems in society , they both have a structured, work based civilization and both have separated themselves from the ways of past society. It is important when reading these novels to focus on the differences as well as the similarities. The two novels differ in their views of love, religion, and the way to eliminate social classes. These differences seem to suggest that if we do not come closer to More’s goal in Utopia, we will end up in a society much like that of Huxley’s Brave New World.
My utopia does not exist in a perfect world; the reason for this is that I believe there is no such thing as a perfect world. There are balanced worlds, and worlds that exist in harmony, but never a perfect world. If there were such thing as a perfect world there would be no need for advancements and breakthroughs as there is now. Society would become stagnant, and eventually die off. So in my utopia, my world, things are ever changing, there is not a day that is like any other; there are similarities, but never the same thing twice.
Secluded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is a place called Sashy, a wonderful, perfect society. It is always peaceful and nothing bad ever happens on the island. The island's air is always fresh and free of any toxins or pollution. Temperature on the South side of Sashy is always warm with no humidity present. On the North side of Sashy the weather is always perfect for winter activities, the temperature is just cold enough for the snow to fall. The North side of the island is full of steep, snow-covered mountains. On the South side of the Sashy clean, sandy beaches cover the land. The ocean water is crystal clear and warm. Sashy is the perfect place to live. On the island, every person is treated as equals. No one person thinks or acts as if they are better than another. There is no racism or sexism present, all types of people reside here and get along together. Living on the island is people from all different cultures and backgrounds. Everyone lives in peace with no fighting, violence, crime, or war. The people of Sashy, called Sashians, do not judge each other by their appearance or whom they interacted with. There are many diverse religions in this community. Each one does not criticize the others for their beliefs. Once a month all the different religions get together at the island community building and congregate together to discuss their viewpoints and thoughts on their faith. Throughout the ages, man has come to idealize a word that is most commonly related to ‘heavenly’ or ‘perfect’ without actually picking up the book and realizing for themselves that there is no such thing. A Utopian society could never exist because man is made to want, to desire success. Man is competitive by nature and would never be happy in a society where everyone is equal and there is no chance of advancement. Sir Thomas More dreamt of a land that was much like England but could never surpass time. He opened the eyes of a nation and made its people desire something new. Views were significantly changed and the world would never be the same. Sir Thomas More inspired dramatic changes in religion, community life and even paved the way for communism. And he did all of this through one simple book about one simple society.
If I had to design a utopia and turn it into an actual something, I would make it almost exactly like earth is now... but it would have some major adjustments.
