The book “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, is a wonderful book which explains in exceptional detail what is was like between 1939 and 1943. The main characters are Liesel Meminger, a girl who goes to foster care, and Rudy Steiner, her best friend whom she meets in Germany, who is obsessed with Jesse Owens, an African American track star. He is also in love with Leisel. Rosa Hubermann and Hans Hubermann, are Liesel’s foster parents. Rosa is mean and strict but Hans is loving and nice. Rosa doesn’t approve of slacking off and fooling around. Hans always fools around. He is fun and outgoing and he loves to play the accordion. Leisel is very timid and shy at first. The majority of the novel takes place between 1939 and 1943 on Himmel and Munich Streets, in the fictional town of Molching, Germany. On the way, her younger brother, Werner, passes away. They have to bury him by the train and keep going. While burying him, the grave digger doesn’t notice that he dropped a book. Liesel took the book when no one was looking. That was the first time she stole a book. Liesel still has to go live with the Hubermanns. She cannot understand why her mother would send her away if she truly loved her. She is too young to realize
