The American Dream is a fantasy made by modern day Americans to give them hope in moving from a lower class level with low income and benefits to a higher class with more stature, prestige, and wealth. Despite this desire most Americans cannot become wealthy or well off simply by working hard and being self-determined. With the top one percent in American holding most of the nation's wealth, how can many Americans hope to reach the levels of the privileged few born into the right families? The answer is that most cannot because those in control of the nation's wealth also control the nation's power and know how to keep their wealth and power so that the common people cannot overthrow them. The notion of obtaining a highly rewarding career and having the ability to live a comfortable live began when America was declared her own country. When the first Americans ventured out to explore the rest of the country, many had the goal of owning land to pass down to their future generations. They would rise from workers …show more content…

Typical workers started to make less money than they did thirty years ago while the top one percent has more than doubled their earnings, going from earning three hundred thousand or so dollars to making more than one million dollars per year while the typical worker makes around twenty thousand to forty thousand a year. Most citizens in the country are not able to purchase a home or receive a college education because of this alarming pay rate for the average citizen while those born into the right families can virtually attend any college or university they desire without having to work as hard as the common man. Those in wealthier families receive more opportunities to expand their wealth and net worth while everyday workers have to struggle to make ends meet without receiving many opportunities to change their lives and make life better for
