Under the telescope of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , Mark Twain brings his audience a play of a boy, Huck, in search of freedom along with developing an innocence true friendship with a runaway slave Jim in a time of racial discrimination. He employs a critical tone demonstrated the social problems in the 19th century American society, yet expresses the idea that unconditional love and instincts prove to have better outcomes than what society demands. Throughout Huck and Jim's story struggles, fallbacks, and advances within their friendship, Mark Twain proves that the choice to do what one feels is right and what society teaches us are not always easy to make. I was truly impressed by the unconditional trust and bond between Huck and Jim; the love beyond age, race and family, it is uncommon in society, not in 19th century, not today’s society. However, Twain uses the beautiful, flawless relationship to ironically criticize the discrimination against black people and demonstrates the true friendship, human bond exists despite of everything else. The relationship started with the journey of pure freedom from all aspects and pressures of the society. Huck and Jim meet on the island after their individual escapes; this gives Huck an opportunity to get to know Jim as a normal person. If the whole journey is a building, then the adventure on the island would be the major building block. No one could influence how Jim was treated by Huck. However, back in the days of slavery, the slaves were believed to be stupid and have no knowledge, this is proved otherwise in chapter 9. "Well, you wouldn't ‘a' ben here ‘f it hadn't ‘a' ben for Jim. You'd ‘a' ben down dah in de woods widout any dinner, an gittin' mos' drownded, too... ... middle of paper ... ...riendship that is rare and uncommon. One would literally runaway for one another’s safety and do things for each other that might cost them their lives. You might tell your friend that you would take a bullet for them any day, but do you really mean it? Without one another, Jim probably would still not have had his freedom and Huck might have been back with his abusive father or possibly in jail. Friends keep you going after you’ve been kicked down, and help you get back up. Twain from beginning to end exhibits the pure relationship between Jim and Huck in contrast to Huck’s own pap. The love and trust are beyond family. What people perceive from the society is smashed into pieces. The inspiring and unbelievable relationship urges audience to make decision out morality instead of social value. The true bond can amazingly happens, even during an era of racism.
