“You express the truth of your character with the choice of your actions” is a fantastic quote by Steve Maraboli. It is plain and simple stating that everything we do is a reflection of our traits. Our inner selves and our true traits are, in the end, what lead us down the paths we take throughout our lives. It is our character traits that motivate us to think, act, and interact the way we do. The first example is in the short story, “The Necklace,” by Guy de Maupassant. Mathilde was an extremely egotistical character. She truly did not care about anything or anyone, including herself, but her image. She would do absolutely anything to protect how others viewed her. This short story had one dynamic character, which was Tessie Hutchinson. Her persona came across as defiant and very nonchalant, which in the end were both traits that were not favorable. In lines 106-110 it says that “Mrs. Hutchinson came hurriedly along the path to the square, her sweater thrown over her shoulders, and slid into place in the back of the crowd. ‘Clean forgot what day it was,’ she said to Mrs. Delacroix, who stood next to her and they both laughed softly.” That piece of evidence shows exactly how worryfree Mrs. Hutchinson was in regards to the lottery. He was always gentle” (Lines 2-3), shows that even though the wife might have seen something that proved that someone wasn’t as good natured as she thought, that she still believed that the thing was not malicious in any way. This piece of evidence is an example of her loving and caring character traits. Her protective trait shows up in lines 104 and 105 where it says, “The mother anger come into me then, and I snarled and crept forward.” This is an important part in the text because although she loved her husband very much, she was willing to do anything, even harm him, to protect her children. In summary, these two pieces of evidence show that the wife’s traits pushed her to do what was right. In this case, she loved her husband to the very end, but she did the necessary things to help her family, friends, and her
