Laura Timmcke Dr.Shadden-Cobb ELA/Social Studies 8 May 2017 Temperance During the 19th through 20th centuries, an uprising spread throughout America called the Temperance Movement. This movement involves the 18th Amendment which is prohibit alcoholic beverages in the United States and the 21st Amendment in the Constitution was passed and ratified, putting an end to the Prohibition from within the 18th Amendment. Many people supported this act because the movement objected the use of alcohol in a place called Harriman, Tennessee. Alcohol causes many problems to life, causing families to crumble, more people going to jail, or ending up with an unpleasant reputation. According to Calvin W. Dickinson, “Southern leaders wanted to deny liquor to blacks and poor whites out of fear that alcohol would inflame passions and increase crime.” Temperance did not want the less fortunate to be able to buy alcohol because of the side effects. They did not know what the lower class was capable of doing while drunk. The society of temperance took matters into their own hands and banned alcohol from African-Americans and underprivileged whites. In other words, temperance did not want their workers getting drunk while they were doing their jobs. According to TeachUsHistory.org, “People accustomed to hard physical labor often drank when working—indeed it was often customary to pay workers with drink as well as money.” The side effects of alcohol are blackout, dizziness, shakiness, craving, or sweating but going to work while in these phases could get you fired. The Temperance Movement did not want all their people getting fired. In conclusion, Temperance did everything in their power to put a stop to alcohol abuse. Harriman Tennessee had a part in this movement and there was no liquor store in Harriman until 1993, that was 24 years ago today. Temperance wanted the best for their people and them trying to put a stop to it
