“Will you lend me this only this? ( Maupassant #3 ) is a quote from “The Necklace” which shows a choice that lead to a consequence. In this paper you will learn about consequences of choice. You can see consequences of choice through Theme, Characterization, and Tone. Characters in these texts and literature in a whole do help me understand the consequences of my choices. First lets see how Theme shows the consequences of choices.
I believe the theme of both of these texts “Necklace” and “Tell Tale Heart” is that choices have consequences. In “Necklace” Mathilde lied about the necklace and her consequence was the ten years of hard labor for the money. In “Necklace” it states “‘that you have broken the clasp of her necklace and that you are having it mended” ( Maupassant #5 ) . This quote shows that they lied about having the necklace broke and they were fixing it when if they said the truth it would have saved them 10 years of work. In “Heart” the choice of killing the old man led to the man’s arrest. In “Heart” it states this “ ‘Villains’ I shrieked ‘dissemble no more I admit the deed’ ” ( Edgar #6 ) . In “Necklace” it states “‘Yes I have had a pretty hard life since I last saw you and great poverty ( Maupassant #7 )’”. Mathildes choice of lying led her to an entire different life and she changes a lot because of the consequences. In “Heart” When the man kills the old man he becomes more and more guilty which is his consequence. In “Heart” it states “ My head ached and I fancied a ringing in my ears” ( Edgar #6 ). This quote shows the main character is going crazy over the guilt and it changes him which is his consequence. In the end the choices characters make, make them change in one way or another.
