The main idea of Tar Beach, to me, is that your imagination can make anything possible. The young girl uses her imagination to make all she wants her. She first explains how much she loves the George Washington bridge, “The bridge was my most prized possession.” She talks about how her father worked on the bridge and how much that meant to her. The author explains that the girl imagines she can fly and once she flies over something, she claims it to be hers. The tar creek mining site originally was owned by a Native American tribe, the Quapaw. The Quapaw wanted to keep these lands, but the Bureau of Indian Affairs deemed members opposing a transaction to mining companies “incompetent” (1). In such a case the business could continue and the Bureau of Indian Affairs sold the lands to mining companies. In essence these lands were stolen from the Quapaw because they were ripe for mining. These mines were then used from approximately 1891 to 1970. In the 79 years the mines were open 1.7 million metric tons (~3.75 billion pounds) of lead and 8.8 million metric tons (~19.4 billion pounds) of zinc were withdrawn from the mine (2). The entire area around Tar Creek is known as the tri-state mining area. This tri-state area was a massive source of metals. This area accounted for 35% of the all worldwide metal for a decade. It also provided the majority of metals the United States used in World wars I and II (3).

The first encounter with Helga Crane, Nella Larsen’s protagonist in the novel Quicksand, introduces the heroine unwinding after a day of work in a dimly lit room. Alone. Or, is she? Although no one else is present in the room, Helga is accompanied by her own thoughts, feelings, and her worrisome perceptions of the world around her. Helga’s anxieties and fears are perhaps some of her most challenging adversaries. And while there are human character antagonists that will soon play a significant role in the novel and in the story of Helga Crane, such as her friends, coworkers, relatives, and ultimately even her own children, there are also enemies that Helga confronts who never say a word. These quiet yet taxing antagonists appear throughout the novel in many different forms. Physical and cultural settings, racial oppression, religious and educational institutions, even the concepts of marriage and childbirth emerge as massive obstacles for Crane. These problems are a substantial source of Helga’s apprehensions and eventually lead to her tragic demise.

Rolling waves gently brushed upon the sand and nipped softly at my toes. I gazed out into the oblivion of blue hue that lay before me.
