The Generations Ever since people started to settle into their way of living, certain expectations over a certain culture is shaped by what the elders pass down. Over generations, the culture slowly changed yet it shapes to what makes society for what it is and what is expected to come from people in that certain time period. So how does this change occur within these generations? In The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, it becomes evident that the older generation influences the younger generation and proves what is expected from its time, especially when it comes to family. Family is a key part to being an influence on what is expected. Such as a son following in his father's steps. “Vincentio’s son, brought up in Florence / It shall become to serve all hopes conceived / To deck his fortune with his virtuous deeds (Shakespeare I. i. 14-16). In The Taming of the Shrew, his father, who is the older generation in this case, has a quality that Lucentio wants to carry on. Having that being his son looking up to him or being inspired for what his father does, his father effected on what Lucentio wants to do with his future career. “For centuries, elders passed down the knowledge that has become our Core Curriculum” (Elderly Influence). For instance, Katherine, the older sister was just the opposite of what Bianca turned out to be. … Unlike Lucentio who wanted to follow in his father's steps, Bianca is the opposite of what her sister is. “Siblings tend to resemble each other in looks and intelligence but are quite different in personality” (Smith). Studies show that between two siblings, they can turn out different from each other. In The Taming of the Shrew, Bianca is not what her sister is like and she does not inspire to be like her.
