The amount of people who learn how to speak English continues to grow because many look to English as a common business language. Non English speakers continue to learn multiple languages like English. While many believe that the popularity of English makes it unnecessary for native speakers to learn other languages, it actually leads English speakers to a disadvantage by not being able to connect culturally to others and the fact that multilingualism is not as popular as some think. Overall, language opens a new door into different cultures. The way language is used differs for every culture. For example, Source F goes on to say that with so many people acquiring English as a language, studying foreign languages “represents a waste of time.” Others claim that learning another language is only a “luxury,” and unnecessary in the global world (A). However having these viewpoints can be disastrous. Many people don’t have an understanding of English, such as how only 56% of the respondents in Europe claimed that they spoke more than one language (C ). Of the 56%, it can’t be assumed that the language they know other than their native tongue is English. Another important note is that yes, foreigners continue to learn English, but how many are fluent enough to have full conversations? How many are easily able to speak in English without giving much thought? Source C goes on to say that assuming multilingualism is very common is not a safe assumption to make because studies that have been used to see how much people speak more than one language aren’t accurate.
