Everything about the LGBT community is one of the most controversial topics in the US. From legalizing gay marriage on June 26, 2015 and now putting same sex couples in TV shows. However, not every country has the same exact rights. In Laos, it is completely different, like neighboring city Vietnam, it is one of the world’s few remaining communist states. It has been strictly ruled by its communist government since 1975. The LGBT is controversial world wide, like other countries have the same problems as we have.

In Laos, it is known that the men in the family are to be the leader of the family. Saying this, the father should not under any circumstances should be gay. If the father is gay, everyone in the family disapproves when their brother or uncle says that they are gay as well. For lesbians they are more appreciated into families and society. In leading to this it is more common to see lesbians because, in Laos, it is like women respect other women. So it is easier then two women to be in a relationship then two men. Lesbians are often sometimes denied completely or misunderstood about their sexuality.

Realistically, our culture and mentality seemed to be quite open-minded to people from all walks of life,Bouapha says “I have seen many transgender people wearing traditional costumes to temples, attending traditional ceremonies and some gay students expressing his identity among his peers and teachers.” In this, Lao is pretty tolerant of homosexuality and the whole LGBT community. Also, in Laos, you can be who you are but you are not protected by any laws. They do not harass you, they do not beat you, they do not abuse you because of who you are.
