From Injustice to Joy
In the short story, “Battle Royal,” by Ralph Ellison (1952) the author uses the symbol of the boxing arena to illustrate how the nameless young, African American, character proceeded with his promised speech even after the discrimination, humiliation, and injustice he suffered. For example, the nameless character mentions the different images and voices he witnesses through the boxing arena. Moreover, the author’s intention to surprise the unknown character with the boxing arena elevated pressure on him because he was not certain on how to even cast a punch. The anonymous character observed how the upper class Caucasian men surrounded the boxing arena like an antagonistic audience waiting impatiently to be entertained. Furthermore, the image of the naked, blonde Caucasian woman struck the unspecified character’s eyes. It is like her figure served for America but led the men astray. The anonymous character states, “I felt a desire to spit upon her as my eyes brushed slowly over her body.” Consequently, he firmly believed the woman initiated an uproar among the drunk men with her sensuous movements; however, the Caucasian woman represents the dominance she had over the crowd of men and the unknown character yearned for their attention so he can expose his speech. Humiliation registered in the nameless character face when he witnessed the electric currents running inside of his body because he grabbed the coins and dollar bills off of the rug. Furthermore, the unknown guy felt ridiculed by the Caucasian men in the boxing arena, but he suffered at the deceptions the Caucasian men assembled. The unnamed protagonist states “my eyes filled with tears and I ran awkwardly off the floor. I was overjoyed” because the surprise of the scholarship over exceeded his expectations. The crowd seasoned the nameless character with devastating mistreatment and ridiculed him except when he received the scholarship. Chiefly, the Caucasian men probably considered the nameless character part of their society due to his intelligence in earning him a scholarship. In addition, the main character had academic excellence at his high school which granted him an invitation to address his speech among these powerful Caucasian men. The boxing arena exposed the unidentified character through several harsh events; however, he survived the suffering incidents and gained the prize. Therefore, enjoyment fulfilled within the unknown character. An accomplishment of the scholarship fueled his mind which left the unknown character speechless. In addition, his thoughts and expression seemed surreal to view the scholarship at his fingertips. Joy became the life of the nameless character despite feeling humiliated by the same people that surrounded the boxing arena at first. The boxing arena contributed to the exhaustion and happiness the unknown character felt.
