Many American’s have been captivated by the television show The Walking Dead since it’s beginning on AMC. The show focuses on the post-apocalyptic world after a living dead outbreak. The show pushes the audience to predict how one might act during the end of the world. Throughout the series The Walking Dead illustrates the survival techniques of Glenn Rhee, Rick Grimes, and Daryl Dixon. Each character on the show depicts very different lifestyle decisions in order to survive. The Walking Dead brings each character to life in a new and refreshing way allowing the audience to feel as though they are in the characters shoes. The character of Rick Grimes is awoken from a coma to find that the world has evolved into the apocalypse. Once awoken Rick is desperate to find his family and protect them from the now disastrous world. Through Rick Grimes character the audience empathizes with the underdog. After seeing his horrific odds I was able to not only empathize but also wonder what I would do if confronted with a similar situation. Throughout the progression of the character Rick Grimes, I witnessed a man begin as an underdog and take on a leadership role. Rick is thrust into the new world and before finding his footing he becomes a natural leader. Although some would disagree on the leadership qualities the character exhibits, I find this character to be crucial to The Walking Dead. The character Daryl Dixon is considered as a predominately tough man with a rigid exterior. From the beginning of the show I was able to identify with Daryl. He is unable to clearly demonstrate any emotional feelings, and is very quick to anger. Although the character does begin to speak freely throughout the series his emotions are kept at bay. During the few scenes that Daryl does become emotional, I not only empathized with him but felt as though I was experiencing his pain too. In The Walking Dead, Daryl is often who the rest of the group turns to for help. Although the character is often seen as the most unapproachable he is more than willing to help anyone he cares for. This provides the audience with a strong male lead that is not only easy to sympathize with but to also care for. The character illustrates compelling relationships with other characters and creates a shift in the group’s intimidating dynamic. Well, the other day I was standing in the check-out line at Costco and I looked down at the contents of my cart. I had a bag of trail mix, a couple cans of corn and beans, a pack of water, a bottle of aspirin, and a memory foam mattress liner. I realized that if the apocalypse started, at that very moment, I would be absolutely fine. I had all of the elements and supplies needed to survive were in the building, if not already in my cart. Therefore, if a zombie apocalypse erupted today, people should seek shelter in Costco in order to survive.
While facing death in every direction, whether from walkers, physical or mental illness, other people, or even the idea of suicide, the world in which Rick and his group live within is a hardened and cold one. Even as such is true, these people still crave survival and must do so by having food and water inside them and supplies on their back. But what would these people be able to eat as a constant food source you may ask? Well the answer is not a constant one but why not look inside the diet of such people. The main protagonist Rick Grimes is portrayed as a small town sheriff who maintains a sense of responsibility and obligation to the people he is with. Though he is frequently challenged on his standings and behavior, he remains as a moral compass throughout the season. One of the best illustrations of this is the “bicycle walker”. Rick first comes across the walker whose only remaining parts were the upper half of a woman's body: head, arms, torso, nothing from the waist down but a few dragging entrails. This can be tight to the current times because we as people never stop, we are always afraid of getting behind, that we have become like zombies or running from zombies. Zombies have become very popular due to their depictions of being easy to kill and being communal. Zombie apocalypses are also very relatable due to the fact that they are set in lives similar to our society and seem easy to overcome. Today in America, people can’t get enough of zombies, zombies are everywhere ranging from movies, books and tv shows. The entertainment business uses the zombie apocalypse theme in order to present a post apocalyptic situation that no other form of genre can really create. In American zombie apocalyptic entertainment, humans must face the horrors of survival and change, while fighting off the zombies, thus also challenging their morals. Pessimistic viewers may see the situation as depressing, prejudice and an means of expressing xenophobia. However optimistic viewers see the situation as an opportunity for better change, individually and as a collective community. Likewise, Ricks traits were a big deal in his life, it defines who he is. His tactfulness and smartness led his colleagues believe in him and give him that post of job. His hard working character payed off as he got to buy a real animal, not a puy little one, but a big one, he got to buy a goat for him and Iran. With both of the traits combined, he gained respect as well as a lot more confidence and experience. His double crossed personality gave him a lot of realization about life, he trusted Rachel a lot, but who knew she would throw his goat off the roof and backstab him. Both Rick Grimes and his actions are moral and unselfish. Rather than being self-centered, Rick puts his life on the line to protect the group and his family with the best of his ability. The well-intentioned actions and selfless motives of Rick is evident in these three examples. In the early events of the zombie outbreak, Rick manages to escape the hospital and meets Morgan and his son Duane. After Duane mistakens Rick for a zombie and knocks him out with shovel, Morgan and him bring Rick to their shelter. Even though Rick is desperately concerned to locate his missing wife and son, he never forgets to return the favor. For a few more days, Rick stays with Morgan and Duane as he takes the two into the town's police department to use the showers and retrieve weapons and ammunition. Despite the overwhelming danger and his worried state, Rick is able to retain his good moral character to the people of of his neighborhood, like Morgan and Duane.

It starts out as finding a safe place from the zombies, but later, as the group is more and more confident in their defense against the zombies, it becomes about protecting themselves from other groups of non-zombies. Paul A. Cantor explains in his story that “this show suggests that its characters must ultimately reply on themselves and their own resources. In various flashbacks, we learn that, prior to the zombie plague, the husband and wives were generally unhappy in their marriages, with soap opera consequences.” (290) The greatest example of survival skills on the Walking Dead, comes from a character named Carol. Watching season 1, you would’ve never imagined Carol being alive in season 7. In the beginning, Carol’s character is a beaten down mousy housewife and mother. Her husband was very emotionally and physically abusive. This vicious cycle of abuse left Carol with little self-worth that left her mentally unprepared for survival skills needed in this zombie apocalypse. Carol quickly realizes that she needs to take matters into her own hands and makes tough decisions that no one in the group will. She eventually becomes so passionate about self-preservation that she starts teaching knife skills to children in their group. Another example of how ruthless her survival skills evolved, she takes a murderess child to the field and tells her “look at the pretty flowers,” and then shoots her in the back of the
The Walking Dead, a television show about surviving in the zombie world, is based on the comic book with the same name created by Robert Kirkman. In this show Rick Grimes, a sheriff's deputy, awakes from his coma and finds himself in a hospital. He soon discovers that while he was in a coma the world had become infected, turning humans into flesh-eating zombies later called Walkers by the characters. As Rick sets out to find his family he encounters many other survivors such as Glenn, Daryl, Carl, Maggie, Carol, Sasha, Hershel, Beth, and Michonne, among many others who have died along the way. Rick and the survivors have been through a lot throughout the show, such as having to move from place to place to avoid being eating by walkers. After walking a longs way, they finally find shelter in an old prison where they now live. Although The Walking Dead shows a lot violence, it sends many positive messages to the viewers that teach them about survival, religion and betray and how each of these can be beneficial in the real world
Throughout six seasons of AMC’s ongoing hit show The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes, the main protagonist, has grown from: a tough guy police officer with a soft heart for helping others (almost always coming with a great personal risk) to the ultimate leader and survivor. Rick’s character arc during the first five seasons of the show, were about the ongoing growth/development of Rick, along with little benchmarks along the way in the form of gruesome but necessary murder. During Rick’s character arc, he goes through three major phases that reflect his morals and view of the world. These changes are then highlighted by the various brutal gory kills Rick has achieved. A series allows for broader representations, therefore a lot more criticism on the postmodern world. The Walking Dead’s ‘walkers’ as the character refer to them on the show, are fictional terrorists - people killing people, except their aims do not go past this, similar to a lot of terrorists in 2017. The media did not hesitate to call Salman Abedi a terrorist. Abedi was killed in the Manchester massacre, hence his intentions were never revealed. To compare, Stephen Paddock who is responsible for the Las Vegas shooting could not be labelled as a terrorist because “We still do not have a clear motive or reason why.” The definition of terrorist does not apply only to ‘Muslims’ howbeit to anyone. It is merely a stereotype that is rapidly corrupting the world. This is the same reason we enjoy zombie movies without contradiction. Terrorism is the second greatest fear in America while zombies are the least according to a Chapman University extensive survey. Zombies are fictional, as one grows up they can separate the real from the fake. Although we are still scared of them, meaning there has to be some truth. Yes, they are brain-eating monsters but they also embody a real life ordeal that we are facing greatly in reality. In The Walking Dead, an audience sees rotting facial features and thinks inhumane, dead. What we fail to notice is the dress codes. They wear everyday clothing.
