The first stanza of “Two Thoughts of Death” by Countee Cullen is pretty straight forward. The narrator explains that when he’s dead, he would not have much of a concern who takes care of his body or who cries for him, after he’s gone. The first impression that the narrator portraits to the reader is of not having compassion for the living or glad for leaving. The first stanza clearly portraits that the topic is death.

“to kiss my long-expectant mouth still curved, in death to meet her mouth” Major Jackson (Countee Cullen 2013). From the quote the reader gets an image of a women and the narrator is about to kiss her. The narrator seems to be in an enlightment faze because he keeps jumping from present to past. Culler’s uses key words that are essential to the understanding the whole theme of the poem, for example. Reverberate (meaning echo) or Martyr ( killed because of religious beliefs). If the reader doesn't understand the meaning of the word it is very difficult to get a clear picture on the whole idea that Culler is trying to portray in his poem.

Death is pictured at the beginning of the poem as a pretty women. Suddenly the picture changes and the narrator explains seeing death coming for him from out far, moving like the wind and cutting down the flowers in her path. Somehow the picture of the grim reaper appears, death is clearly the main topic

“Two Thoughts of Death” is a poem that touches on the areas of death and the true meaning of life. Countee Culler lived during the Harlem Renaissance, after WWI Renaissance of time that there was a lot of death surrounding every one.
