“The Third WIsh” by Joan Aiken is a fairytale that mostly takes place in part of the Savernake forest at the back of the canal. Mr. Peters and Leita are the main the characters. In the story Mr. Peter shows that making selfish choices can have consequences. When he gets the three wishes he makes a very selfish first wish. He loves the wish for a little bit but he starts to see that his wish makes Leita, the swan, a very unhappy person so he takes his second wish to make her happy again. This actually brings him happiness now that she can be happy. The lesson in the story, selfish decisions do not lead to lasting happiness, is shown through Feelings and emotion and Dialogue. Aiken uses Emotions to show the lesson in the story. Leita goes everyday to the canal in the forest. Mr. Peters followed her one day. “”Yes, I do, I do love you,” she said, and there were tears in her eyes again.” (2).Through dialogue they are talking about how she feels and how she does love Mr. Peters, but she misses her sister and the old life. When she gets tears in her eyes Mr. Peters can see that she is hurting. “I could use my second wish to give your sister human shape, so that she could be a companion to you.” He suggested. “No, No,” she cried “I couldn't ask that of her.”” (2) When leita says this Mr. Peter starts to see how selfish his wish was. He did not want to give up the wish, so he tried to turn her sister into a human. She did not want it because it will make her sister unhappy too. Eventually Mr. Peters says “”Then shall I use my second wish to turn you back into a swan?”” He realized it was the right thing to do. They used the dialogue to show Mr. Peters that the wish he made was selfish. Later on, “Poor Mr. Peter was very distressed on his wife’s account and did his best to make her life happier, taking her for drives in the car, finding beautiful music for her to listen to on the radio, buying clothes for her and even suggesting a trip around the world. But she said no to all of that; she would prefer to stay at her home near the river.”(2-3) Mr. Peters tried his best to get
