Markus Zusak is the son of German and Austrian parents. His mother lived in Munich. His father lived in Vienna. He was born in 1975 in Sydney, Australia, the youngest of four children. Neither parents could read or write English when they first arrived in Australia. Zusak began writing fiction at 16 years old. The setting of the Book Thief is a neighborhood on Himmel Street. Himmel Street is in the town of Molching, Germany. The story is set in World War 2.
Liesel Meminger was 9 years old when she was taken to live with a foster family in 1939. She comes with a few things. One of them is a book she has stolen from her brother’s gravesite. As the year’s pass, Hitler becomes more powerful and life begins to change for Liesel. Her only freedom from life in Nazi Germany are the words she learns from her only thing that keeps her sane. In the rising action, Liesel finally gets settled into her new house. Max moves into the basement. He has to stay hidden because of the war. Liesel is stealing more books. She also steals food with her new friend Ruby. The climax is, attacks are happening in Nazi Germany. Rudy and Liesel are secretly feeding a small group of Jews. There is still a lot of bombing. Liesel finds Max, but he is getting whipped. The falling actions are, the air attacks are still happening. The air attack goes on to kill Rosa, Hans, Rudy, and the rest of her
