The New Yorker, contains a tremendous article called “No Refuge” by Sarah Stillman. As the author, she has effectively uses cases of deportation to prove her proposition that being deported under Trump’s administration is a death sentence to the immigrants. Throughout the article, Stillman’s evidences appeal to logos and pathos; however, many of her evidences are known to be a faulty generalization. First, Stillman’s evidences revolve around the death of the individuals who were murdered when they landed in Mexico after deportations; specifically Laura’s case. Laura, was abused by her deported husband and was soon deported after a traffic stop by the police officer coming home from work. Like Laura’s case, most of Stillman’s evidences prove
No Promises In the Wind, authored by Irene Hunt, gives an excellent description of growing up in the center of the Great Depression. Chapter One begins with the alerting sound of an alarm clock going off at 4am. Josh, a fifteen year old boy, leaves his bed, and departs from his family’s home to deliver newspapers. Notwithstanding, the paper route brought very little money, but the money earned was needed. Directly after finishing his route, Josh returns home to prepare for school, where he anticipated the day’s end, knowing that Miss Crowne’s music room belonged to them after school hours.
In numerous way a character in an book can be affected or influenced by their culture in the novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand a young man by the name of Louie Zamperini is affected at an early age by his culture. While reading the novel an individual would find out that Louie is the son of two Italian immigrants, few years after Louie was born he moves to this small surber city called Torrance with his family. While living in this town Louie family has to fight against prejudices of the citizen not wanting this Italian family living in the neighborhood. In the first few chapter someone would learn that in the 1920s Torrance ,California was very prejudices to the Zamperini family by trying to get the city council members from letting them move into the city.Meanwhile, Louie Italian heritage did have a small effect on him as he was becoming an adult.
As children grow up and can take care of themselves, the roles of parents and children and their relationship undergo a transformation. In “Survival Zones” by Barbara Kingsolver, Roberta and Roxanne’s relationship inspires both characters during their hard times.
Great people often arise from unlikely places. During the civil war women were barred from serving in the army; however, women did sometimes disguise themselves as men and enlisted in both the Confederate and Union armies. During the Civil War years of 1861 to 18-65, soldiers under arms mailed countless letters home from the front. There are multiple accounts of women serving in military units during the Civil War, but a majority of these incidents are extremely hard to verify. Nevertheless, there is the one well-documented incident of the female Civil War soldier by the name of Sarah Rosetta Wakeman.
John F. Kavanaugh, a professor of philosophy and a Jesuit priest, wrote the article “Amnesty? Let Us Be Vigilant and Charitable” for an issue of America, a Jesuit publication. In his article, he discusses the negatives of American immigration laws and argues for their reform. Kavanaugh begins his article by addressing his audience of Catholics in America’s emotions through the classical appeal of pathos. In his first sentence, he tells the story of a lovable woman with a family who was deported back to an unsafe area in Mexico, “.in the last 15 years, 600 young women have been kidnapped, raped, murdered and buried in the desert” (26).
I thought that Diane Guerrero who is an American actress speech about her family’s deportation was interesting. She recently appeared on an immigration themed of Chelsea handler’s talk show. Guerrero is the citizen daughter of immigrant parents. Guerrero mentioned how her family was taken away from her when she was just 14 years old. “Not a single person at any level of government took any note of me. No one checked to see if i had a place to live or food to eat, and at 14, i found myself basically on my own”, Guerrero added. Luckily, Guerrero had good friends to help her. Kavanaugh begins by introducing us to Maria, a woman who, due to her illegal immigration 25 years ago, has been torn apart from her family and deported to Ciudad Juárez, a city that has witnessed 600 crimes against women like Maria in the past 15 years. Kavangaugh’s introduction works to exploit the negative aspects of the American government’s current deportation system and how it can, knowingly, separate families and destroy the lives of productive individuals within our society. In Mary Rowlandson, “A Captivity Narrative”, Rowlandson recounts her experiences as a captive of the Wampanoag tribe. The tribe took captives from Lancaster in 1676 because of the ongoing violent altercations between the English colonists and Native Americans during King Philip’s War. Since many of the Native Americans brethren had fallen in battle, they saw it fit to take English folk captive and use them to take the place of their fallen brethren, trading/ransom pieces, or killing them in revenge. This was becoming a common practice for the Native Americans to attack villages and in result, some English started fleeing the area or started to retaliate. Although there is a controversy on this matter, America should welcome immigrants that are already here. Immigrants may earn legal status as well as cost just as much or less than deportation. But, so what? Why is this notable? Well, here’s why, the future is on the line and we have to take charge. If leading undocumented immigrants to a path to citizenship, includes all of the previously mentioned advantages, there is no point to do otherwise. If we don’t go through with this, imagine the troublesome possibilities, imagine the costs, imagine the risks. It is necessary to lead undocumented immigrants to a path to citizenship, and your help is needed. The data in Sampson’s research is designed to circumvent these issues by relying on testimony from neighborhood residents – both legal and illegal – rather than police statistics. Sampson concludes that “police arrest biases or undercounts can’t explain the fact that first generation immigrants self-report lower violence than the second generation, which in turn reports less than the third generation.” (2008). It would appear that President Trump’s “Bad Hombres” have very little basis in data.
