Like most teenagers, my worldview has been shaped by the background to which I have been exposed. I am a product of my family, school, church and social experiences. Admittedly, mine is a worldview that is relatively narrow. A weeklong experience during the first month of my senior year has dramatically changed the rose-colored glasses through which I see the world. First, I will share some background. My hometown of Eden Prairie, Minnesota is an affluent, well-educated suburb southwest of Minneapolis. Historically, its population has been primarily upper middle class white professionals. He has forced me to reflect on my lack of compassion, forced me to understand what it means to take incalculable risks in the pursuit of a better life, and to understand that fear of the unknown and the passion to overcome that fear can coexist. One of my roles as a student leader of Connect 9 is to help introduce new students to our massive high school and its student body of 3,600 students. For most new students, this is an overwhelming and daunting experience. Prior to meeting Rahul, I had primarily served as a counselor for kids who looked like me. It was easy to relate, make conversation, to introduce them to my friends. I had little concern about these students' ability to assimilate and ultimately find their niche. When I was assigned to guide Rahul through his first week at EPHS, I assumed it would be an experience similar to others I'd had during the past two years. He’d been sent to live with distant relatives, leaving his parents and younger siblings 7,500 miles behind.
