Our education system faces a myriad of questions. One of which is, what is the main objective of our education system: to graduate students at a high academic standard, to graduate students who can interact socially, or to prepare students wholly in order to become contributing members of society? Parents, school districts, and the government all have their own ideas as to the primary purpose. The means (education) to the end (producing educated citizens) can take many roads or methods. One method goes down the road of social promotion. However, the unpopular practice of social promotion in our schools does not prepare our children academically. It promotes low standards, accepts mediocrity, and gives a false hope of success in a world which is unforgiving towards the uneducated.

In modern times, it comes as no surprise that there are a plethora of issues and negative occurrences throughout the traditional educational system. Schooling is not a choice, but a mandatory duty that each and every child must fulfill almost daily. Depending on grade level and work load, the average student spends nearly 8 hours per day either learning in school or completing assignments from that day (U.S. Bureau). This indicates that a majority of a secondary education student’s time is consumed by school and school related work. Because this is an obligatory role, it is imperative that these students are not being forced to do such work, but instead are interested and engaged so that they may enjoy this work. Although there is a multitude of reasons that a student may do poorly in school, a substantial cause is the flaws with the grade level system that most schools implicate. The elimination of grade level systems is not entirely unheard of or practiced, but it has not been extricated enough to show the advantages of alternative schooling systems.

As Alexander, Entwisle, and Dauber put it, the answer to social promotion and retention is intervention policies that ensure that resources are brought to bear to promote successful student learning, especially for those children at risk of failure. (Alexander, 1994) This policy should lower failing rates and help students gain the mastery over the studied material it also shows them that they do not have little worth and that much is expected from them. This policy change address why students fail and changes in those areas are necessary for them to succeed.
The education system and the peer group within the school system are important socialisation agents in an individual’s life. Children from an early age absorb the values, attitudes and beliefs of the society in which they participate (Ashman & Elkins, 2009).
Children in this stage divert more of their time and energy towards knowledge and education. Teachers, parents, and peers alike are all big influencers at this stage. In my first year of elementary school, I faced the task of making new friends as well as adapting to a new curriculum, having transferred from a Montessori school. Excelling in many subjects, I was placed in a few higher-level classes. These classes were my favorite part of the day and I had an amazing teacher who taught in engaging and creative ways. Many of us in those classes became close friends and felt special for being a part of it all. At the start of fifth grade, however, there was a teacher change and all that shifted. This new teacher didn’t meet my enthusiasm for class, and with a lack of support and understanding my grades began to drop, especially in math. Upon seeing my report card, I cried and decided I wasn’t smart enough to be in higher-level classes anymore. When I told my parents about my failure, their reactions differed significantly. One parent told me they weren’t disappointed as long as I tried my hardest and not to be too hard on myself. Conversely, the other parent wasn’t pleased and wasted no time comparing my abilities to those of my older sisters. This paper’s purpose is to exhibit my understanding of adolescents and how their self-esteem/self-concept, play a role in their educational development. As adolescents progress through middle and high school, forming an opinion of oneself can be a difficult task to accomplish. What self-esteem means is the appraisal of or attitude toward the self (Wagner & Ludtke, 2013). Adolescents are trying to identify if they like who they are, if they are confident in this person, a lot of personal turbulence can occur for the individual. Wagner and Ludtke also stated that in early adolescence there is a consistent decrease in self-esteem. One of the many reasons for this is the increasing realistic self-views, and the general focus on negative feedback rather than positive feedback. It is our jobs as teachers to guide our students in the right direction of helping them overcome any doubts they have of themselves. In a sense we must use what we know to help them find the confidence to realize that each and every student is an individual and are special in their own way. So in this paper, through research and my own ideas I would like to present how I would go about these scenarios as a future educator.
Socialization is the process of passing down norms, customs, and ideologies that are important to the society by the previous generations to the younger generations. The school system is a social agency that was created to enhance the processes of socialization through education. The importance of school as an agent of socialization can be best explained by the amount of time students spend in school and in activities happen around school. The manifest functions of school are to educate students the social norms, and the knowledge and skills that help them become economically productive in order to benefit the society. But students not only learn from the academic curriculum but they also benefit from socialize with their teachers and peers.
