In the short story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin there are many different things going on. Mrs.Mallard receives some news that she could react to in many different ways. The story starts off with her sister informing her about tragic news, but then the ending in a very ironic way. Right away the story begins with Mrs.Mallard hearing the news that her husband has passed away in a train accident. Since she has heart trouble her sister Josephine told her through hints so that it was all not brought on to her at one time. She did not want to accept the fact that her husband was gone. She began crying in her sister's arms and then decided to go to her room by herself. She is alone gazing out the window, still crying like a young child …show more content…

It was Mr.Mallard, alive and well not even aware of an accident. Richard tries to hide Mrs.Mallard from seeing because of her heart condition, her seeing him so suddenly and unexpectedly could hurt her. Unfortunately, Richard was too late. When the doctors arrived they said she had died from heart disease, the joy that kills. When she saw her husband alive she was full of so much happiness that she had thought she lost, only to have it all back ending up it being too overwhelming for her. Chopin killed her off for this reason. Proving that it was not a “monstrous joy” for her to feel that way about her husband's death. She was really trying to hide the fact that she was upset. It is ironic because the whole story was based around her husband's death, and the way she was reacting to it. Meanwhile in the end it turned out that he was alive and she would be the one dead. It leaves us as the readers wondering how he will react to her death. Will he be as “happy” as she was or will he be truly upset and face reality? Chopin is trying to express that joy kills. It is ironic because she is so happy to see her husband, but the heart attack kills her. It could also express that this death is for the
