There are a lot of great stories but this story of Mathew is incredible. Many know Mathew since freshman year and some even became close to him, building lasting and good friendships. He’s confident, has a good humor, is humble, and courageous. But getting to know him more and more, one can find out a lot of things about him. Furthermore, Mathew is that type of person who has a lot of dreams and goals that he wants to accomplish. For instance, one of his goals is to finish high school, but he has some problems with that. He started to write about his life when he had a lot of problems that he couldn’t fix. One of them was that his mother doesn’t trust him anymore, since his friend taught him how to lie. The first time he lied to his mother, his mother knew Mathew was not telling the truth. A month later his mom found out that Mathew wasn’t going to school; she found out he was hanging out with his friends instead of going to school. His mother also found out that his grades in school were low and that he has been absent a lot of times. Mathew’s mom was trying to talk to him, but at that time he didn’t listen to her; he was just ignoring her and being disrespectful to her. One day Mathew decided to leave the house to stay at his friend’s. He didn’t tell anyone where he was going; he kept things to himself. His mom thought he was just going to leave one day since they both had a fight. But one day became one month and his mother was worried about him. She didn’t know what to do, so she decided to go get him at his friend’s house. She arranged treatment for him and after one week Mathew was sent to rehab to fix himself and to realize what he did wrong with his life. Mathew was in rehab for two to three weeks. After rehabilitation, Mathew got home and hugged his mom so tight and whispered in her ears, “mom, I’m sorry”. He promised her that he will change, that he won’t do the stuff he did. Mathew realized his friends influenced him more and more in a bad way. After two months Mathew saw his old friends. He talked to them for a bit and told them, “I can’t be friends with you guys anymore”. He decided to end their friendship because of what happened. Mathew soon realized how important life is really. He once said, “I’m lucky to have a mom like my mother; after all this thing that happened to me, I realized life really matters. I guess it’s a good thing that this happened to me because it made me grow and I learned from my own mistakes. The physical abuse is the root of his problems, affecting his self-esteem and self-image. He may be a genius, but he has thought of himself not to be worthy of anything including the praise of being an intellect. He runs away from the professor unwilling to be acknowledged for his intellect. He suffers from an inferior complex which he tries to counter by being the only one among his friends with a high intelligence to give him a superior status among them. His relationship is affected too when he tries to form one with Skylar. The young man also displays an impulsive nature which has gotten him in trouble in the past with the law which is why the judge was ready to be hard on him in the recent anger display. The same character flaw has been causing trouble for him in his relationship with Skylar which has been unstable. The moment she tells him she is leaving, the emotional mood swings and the explosive anger kick in and he pushes her away, and he even takes up a job to avoid confronting his fear of being abandoned. His fear of authority has made him humble and left him with no growth goal in his personal and work life. He wishes to remain hidden and unnoticeable. He lost his best friend, who he spends a great deal of time living alongside. It is unjustifiable to lose a friend, especially for no reason or due to an uncontrollable disease while having to watch in absolute terror not being able to help, but only wish and prey. Holly Janquell is a runaway. Wendelin Van Draanan creates a twelve year old character in the story, Runaway, that is stubborn and naive enough to think she can live out in the streets alone, until she is eighteen.She has been in five foster homes for the past two years. She is in foster care because her mother dies of heroin overdose. In her current foster home, she is abused, locked in the laundry room for days without food, and gets in even more trouble if she tries to fight back. Ms.Leone, her schoolteacher, could never understand her, and in Holly’s opinion, probably does not care. No one knows what she is going through, because she never opens up to any one. Ms. Leone gives Holly a journal at school one day and tells her to write poetry and express her feelings. Holly is disgusted. But one day when she is sitting in the cold laundry room, and extremely bored, she pulls out the diary, and starts to write. When Holly can take no more of her current foster home, she runs, taking the journal with her. The journal entries in her journal, are all written as if she is talking to Ms.Leone, even though she will probably never see her again. Over the course of her journey, Holly learns to face her past through writing, and discovers a love for poetry. At some point in this book, Holly stops venting to Ms. Leone and starts talking to her, almost like an imaginary friend, and finally opens up to her.
The mother is a selfish and stubborn woman. Raised a certain way and never falters from it. She neglects help, oppresses education and persuades people to be what she wants or she will cut them out of her life completely. Her own morals out-weight every other family member’s wants and choices. Her influence and discipline brought every member of the family’s future to serious-danger to care to her wants. She is everything a good mother isn’t and is blind with her own morals. Her stubbornness towards change and education caused the families state of desperation. The realization shown through the story is the family would be better off without a mother to anchor them down.
Just as Johnny’s courage shines through so does his fast maturity from child to adult. His childhood was stolen away from him by his illness but instead of sulking he pulls himself together. He takes every difficulty in stride, and gets through them. Even when he is feeling down he hides it for he does not want anyone else to feel his pain. Being a seventeen year old boy he wants to do the things all other seventeen year old boys do.
The story begins with the narrator’s brother, Sonny, being arrested for using heroin. When the narrator discovers what has happened to his brother, he slowly starts to relive his past. Up to this point, the narrator had completely cut his brother and his childhood from his life. He disapproves of the past and does everything in his power to get rid of it. The narrator had become an algebra teacher and had a family who he moved to get away from the bad influences on the street. As a result, it is shown in the story that he has worked hard to maintain a good “clean” life for his family and himself. Readers can see that he has lived a good life, but at the toll of denying where he came from and even his own brother. For years, his constant aim for success had been successful. However, as the story progressed everything he knew started to fall apart.
Nothing hurts more than being betrayed by a loved one, Christopher’s father has no trust in Christopher and tells him that his “Mother died 2 years ago”(22) and Christopher thinks his mother died of a heart attack. When Christopher finds out his father lied, he runs away to live with his mother and his father despritally looks for him and while looking for him realizes the importance of telling the truth. When someone betrays one’s trust, they can feel morally violated. Once Christopher finds his mother, she begins to realize how unfit her living conditions are for Christopher and brings him back to his father, bring him “[..] home in Swindon”(207) Christopher feels incredibly hurt and distressed he does not want to see his father. Whether a relationship can be repaired depends entirely on whether trust can or cannot be restored. Christopher’s father works very hard to regain his trust, he tells his son “[..] I don’t know about you, but this...this just hurts too much”, Christopher’s father is dealing with the result of being dishonest with his son and himself.
In Matthew, Jesus performs miracles, shares parables, and teaches the way of God. The theme of Matthew 's Gospel gives evidence to Jesus as the Messiah, the son of Abraham, the one chosen by God to deliver the people from their sins (Matthew 1:1). Which places special emphasis on Jesus’ fulfillment of prophecies – the prophecy of “the Son of David’ (Matthew 12:23).
As he grows older, his style changes and he sees the real world as it really is as opposed to his fantasies he had when he was younger. A major development in the story is the actual act of becoming a man. Boys his age have a festival for many days that lead up to their circumcision, after which they become men. After this accomplishment, he still writes about his fears and his thoughts but he is much more wary to keep them to himself. And as he grows even older he moves away from home to attend Technical College for four years. These years change him very much and when he returns home he is much more of an adult and conducts himself in such a manner.
The Gospel according to Matthew, although being the first book of the New Testament canon, it was not considered the first gospel genre to be written. Matthew’s gospel gives an account of the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. In this essay, I intend to look at how the exegesis and interpretation of this gospel may be affected by our understanding of the authorship, its intended readership and where and when it was written. Although all these categories are important in their own right, I will focus more of the intended audience and readership of this gospel.
The book of Matthew is a Gospel Narrative. The purpose of Matthew has numerous aspects of importance. It is here to tell that Jesus is the promised Messiah of the Old Testament prophecy. Because the gospels , (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) are narratives (like the Old testament histories), we should emphasize the broader context when reading them. We should always think about the broader sweep of the narratives, constantly relating the various events and teachings to those that precede and follow them. The heart of the narrative lies in the interrelation of the various events and teachings to one another. To ignore this interrelation is to miss the basic meaning of the narrative. The gospels demand some background information regarding history and culture1. It is more relevant to understand the culture, values and worldview of the people on the pages of the Gospel, than to know the specific author or recipients. All of that interaction comes to full light when we understand those important historical and cultural aspects of the gospels. The focus on the gospels is on Jesus, not on us! The Gospels were primarily written to tell us about who Jesus is, what he did for us, and why He is the only true object of our faith. If we change this focus1, we distort the very essence of the Gospels. We will think of Him as the God-man who walked the earth and now sits resurrected and glorified at the right hand of our Father. With four different Gospels, we should do comparisons of the various Gospel accounts when appropriate. When you blend the different Gospels together, you loose something unique and precious. We need to understand the centrality of the Kingdom of God in the Gospel.
In the assessment of Ryan, the parent provided crucial information that led to identification of challenges that Ryan was going through. The parent spent a lot of time helping the child to complete his homework. Secondly, the parent realized that Ryan would be able to memorize a story, but reading and writing down the story was the challenge because the letters were jumbled up in a word. Ryan was showing extreme signs of frustration while at home, an aspect that he hid from his class teacher and schoolmates. Ryan was not afraid to ask the mother for help in doing homework and worked quite hard to please the mother, although inherent challenges frustrated his efforts.
