The events that led up to the arrest of Martin Luther King in Birmingham were nothing short of unfortunate and untimely. He was serving as the President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference when a colleague called on King to travel to Birmingham to participate in a nonviolent protest. He agreed and when the time came he lived up to his word and found himself in Birmingham. After the court had ordered that he could not hold protests there, King was arrested for disregarding the court order and protesting the treatment of blacks. Soon after his arrest eight clergymen wrote a statement denouncing and criticizing King 's efforts towards equality. This drove him to write his “Letter From Birmingham Jail” during his time in confinement In this paragraph he uses descriptive language when saying things such as, “..vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick and even kill your brothers and sisters..” He is giving a clear description of the things blacks have to see their family members suffer through. One can not help but envision his own family members being put through this kind of torture as he reads about it happening to other families in the United States. He goes on to write, “when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society..” it is almost as if he is suggesting that the Negros are nothing but statues, stuck with harsh treatment, hate and anger until the rest of America, specifically the white supremacists, sort out their problems. By giving such specific details about what blacks have to endure, he is able to appeal to every American 's emotions. Parents, children and grandparents alike. Everyone who cared about anybody could read this and visualize such harsh treatment being afflicted about those they care about the most and would perhaps feel a slight pang of
