My definition of social justice in the field of education is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child and the British-Colombia School Act that state that every child has a right to a proper education (UNICEF, n.d.; School Act, RSBC 1996, c. 412). A proper education to me is based on opportunity. I believe that in order to have a proper education, children should all be entitled to equal opportunity in their learning process. Over the past several decades, women of the United States have debated and struggled for many freedoms guaranteed to them by the Founding Fathers. One of these women, Susan B. Anthony, traveled across the country giving passionate speeches and writing books of conviction about women’s suffrage. Even though women would not always win cases brought to court, they still retained their views and continued their movement to gain their rightful freedoms. Susan B. The American Dream has never been available to minority citizens as easily as it is to American-born citizens. Affirmative action was first implemented around the year 1972, however it was not widely accepted or practiced. During this time society was just getting used to including women in higher education institutions so the concept of including minorities in higher education was almost non-existent. My Beloved World, by Sonia Sotomayor shows the challenges that a first generation, Puerto Rican, lower socioeconomic female had during this time. Through her autobiography she shows the struggles she faced throughout her life, focusing on her application to college, college experience and insight into her cultural background. My Beloved World present the ideology of White Supremacy and other phenomenon’s such as structural inequality, and socioeconomic inequality that interfere with Sonia’s inability to receive preparation for college and these things show the that America has not made good on its promise of equal opportunity for all.
The United States is known as the “land of the free” attracting many immigrants to achieve the “American Dream” with the promise of equal opportunity for all. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This quote summarizes the main points that President Roosevelt and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were trying to pursue. Both men had similar views on how people all over the world deserved to be treated. they were willing to do something about it differently from how other organizations were attempting to solve their problems. Ending injustice peacefully was the only thing on their mind. Not only the African Americans in America but all people everywhere in the world deserved to be treated equally. Humans were entitled to have their inalienable fundamental rights regardless of their location, ethnic origin, language or religion. Both speeches addressed the issues of equality, only to end injustice civilly.
Knowledge is power. An example of awareness producing activism can be seen in the war against Iraq. When one learns of an unjust war being carried out they, now knowing the circumstances, will act as they will to stop the injustices occurring. The same can be seen in women’s activism. When people become educated on the topic of women’s rights, they come to understand the circumstances and can act accordingly to help stop the problems from carrying on. Anne-Marie O’Connor’s article about the maquiladora women in Mexico and their terrible working conditions brought awareness about, as well as Sam Dylan’s article on the mistreatment of these women.
Maria Hinojosa wrote an essay entitled, “A Supreme Sotomayor: How My Country Has Caught up to Me” (21). Hinojosa writes about minorities and their job status (21). The author believes that minorities are just now getting powerful jobs that can have an effect of the country, for an example the author uses Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor (22).
