Parenting is hard! Being responsible for the development, protection, growth, health, and care for a child is all consuming and at times overwhelming. From sun up until well past sun down, day after day, year after year, the raising of a child is the full time job that never offers a break. Rewarding, of course, difficult, hell yes it is. Single parents face all of the challenges and difficulties of any parent but have to face them without the benefit of partner, a co-parent to help carry some of the burdens. Single parent homes are not a new phenomenon; they are not unique to any one culture, and are increasing in numbers. ("Single-Parent Families ") Single parents by default must do the work of two people; this requires them to be consistent, conscientious, and creative. Social media can offer single parents a helping hand. (Caron) (Clemente, Jude. Rise of Single Parent Households) Single parent households occur for many and varied reasons. Including unintended pregnancies, divorce, death, and by choice. ("Single-Parent Families ") Single parent households have steadily increased over the several decades and currently 30% of US households are single parent households. ("Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007 ") This means that single parents are raising almost 22 million children in the United States. ("Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007 ") A female parent 78 % of the time heads single parent households. ("Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007 ") Male parents lead the single parent households comprise 22 % of the time. A study featured in Time magazine informed Americans that middle to lower class single parents will work 40+ hour weeks at minimum wage to provide for their child. If the parent is so busy at work, who's watching the child? Sometimes, the single parent might still have connection with their own families. Grandma and grandpa have to raise the child since the parent is hard at labor to provide for their offspring. Occasionally, some of our elderly folk do not have the competence to watch over a child. It might even be that the child is too energetic and could wear out the seniors. The child will then resort to the television, street, friends, etc to learn and grow. These influences might be negative for the child especially if they're not coming from the mother or father. An investigation of single parenting leads to the affirmation that raising a child by yourself is very difficult and must be approached very leniently and effectively.
