Atonement is set in England during the 1930’s in which during that time society was highly influenced by very segregated social class, in the novel both characters Cecilia and Robbie are the most affected characters by this segregated social class. Social class is one of the big themes in the novel “Atonement” it helps establish the background and foundation of the whole plot. It adds to the conflict the characters deal with throughout the novel. Social class is an example of social structure; class deals with the shaping of a cultural group who share many similar qualities as in race or economic standing. Social class also shapes the way people interact with each other, in other words how they interact with different social groups that already been established. This is demonstrated by even though Cecilia and Robbie both went to Cambridge together they never became friends because of the obvious social separations.

Social structure in terms of sociology means “the distinctive, stable arrangement of institutions whereby human beings in a society interact and live together,”(Britannica School, “social structure.”) Social structure is not a behavior science, these structures are not formed by behavior differences, and this is proven by studies done by sociologist. Social structure can be thought as how people with different social entities interact with each other. ...rize people by their wealth, occupation, and ethnicity. This social class was put in to work to see where someone stands in society. Atonement showed this with Robbie he was in the lower class and was convicted of a crime he didn't commit. Shows that he was seen as someone lower than everyone else. Of course this was a wrong thing to do but people’s nature have it that they always want power and wealth and in order for someone to be living the luxurious life there has to be someone doing the dirty work. These people are the ones who are often stereotyped and taken advantage of. So Atonement tells us that social class in England during the 1930’s was a system that only helped those who were wealthy by making them seem like they were the bigger person, the powerful one, and the rich ones. It showed people who were at the top of the social standings.
