“Harrison Bergeron” and 2081 In the short story “Harrison Bergeron” and in the film 2081 Harrison and the beautiful ballerina were murdered by the Handicap General. This fact is very important to both the story and the film because Harrison’s death was the main concept of both “… the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun. She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor.” Harrison was trying to show the people what the government was really like and how it’s okay to be different. The filmmaker kept this part of the story within the film because Harrison sacrificing himself to show people the reality of the government is the moral of the story. In the film 2081,
One similarity between the text and the movie was that everyone was equal in every way. It was important that the filmmakers keep this in the movie because it’s the most important detail in the story. In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron”, it says, “They were equal in every which way. Nobody was smarter than everyone else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than everybody else” (1). If the filmmakers had never kept the equality part in 2081, the storyline would not make any sense. In the movie, everyone that needed handicaps had them including George, Harrison, and the ballerinas.
One similarity between “Harrison Bergeron” 2081 is that George had a mental handicap. This is important to the story because since the transmitter sent a sharp noise “to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains”, neither he or Hazel could think about Harrison for very long or even remember that he had been killed seconds after it happened. This was also important to the film because it showed us pieces of what happened the night Harrison was taken away and gives the audience an idea what the handicaps feel like for the characters.

The real problems are shown as well as what important pieces are missing. Fahrenheit 451 forms the idea that our world today focuses on the unimportant and ignorant things in life causing people from this book lack some basic human rights. Additionally, in Harrison Bergeron, the public is forced to wear handicaps that hides their gifts they were born with. This world is forced to be equal and anyone who speaks out against it will be executed. Through the pages of Fahrenheit 451 and the Harrison Bergeron, the real flaws in today's society leading many people to have their freedoms diminished, or taken away are shown.
Harrison Bergeron took off his handicaps because he was willing to stand up for what's right. They should have understood why he was standing on the stage yelling "i am the emperor". He was not trying to be a threat. Bergeron is a hero to several people. Except, to others he is a threat. Harrison might have come on a little too strong, but like people say,"you should not judge a book by its cover". He was just trying to state how those handicaps were taking the people's emotions away. When really they should be free to feel their own emotions. Not what the government was channeling them too. The government should be helping the country, not destroying it. Some people got headaches due to these handicaps. The government would channel all of these people's emotions.
Harrison Bergeron is a short story that creates many images and feelings while using symbols and themes to critique aspects of our lives. In the story, the future US government implements a mandatory handicap for any citizens who is over their standards of normal. The goal of the program is to make everyone equal in physical capabilities, mental aptitude and even outward appearance. The story is focused around a husband and wife whose son, Harrison, was taken by the government because he is very strong and smart, and therefore too above normal not to be locked up. But, Harrison’s will is too great. He ends up breaking out of prison, and into a TV studio where he appears on TV. There, he removes the government’s equipment off of himself, and a dancer, before beginning to dance beautifully until they are both killed by the authorities. The author uses this story to satire
The world is divided up into numerous things: Countries, states, cities, communities, etc. However, when looking at the big scope of things, one can group the vast amount of people into a society. This society is where the majority lie in the scheme of things - in other words, the common people. Individuals do exist in this society, but they are scarce in a world of conformism. Society’s standards demands an individual to conform, and if the individual refuses they are pushed down by society.
Harrison is no ordinary being of society. In fact, he is described as "a genius, an athlete,…and should be regarded as dangerous….Instead of a little ear radio for a mental handicap, he wore a tremendous pair of ear phones, and spectacles with thick wavy lenses….Scrap metal [is] hung all over him….he wear[s] at all times a red rubber ball for a nose, keep[s] his eyebrows shaved off, and cover[s] his even white teeth with black caps at snaggle-tooth random" (Vonnegut 236). His physical appearance alone would definitely offset him from the rest of the crowd. Just by walking down the street, one could sense his greatness by his excessive handicaps. Furthermore, his mental capacity is great enough to override the annoying sounds that the H-G men create. The reader can obviously see that Harrison has something more to offer, yet his society is binding him down and taking away his individuality: "Harrison 's only crime was taking control of the television studio, but his motives outweighed the crime. He was shot for exposing the world to beauty" (Marton). In this sense, Harrison represents uniqueness of an individual. The idea of being treated equal and being the same is a connection between the pictures of the children on boxes and the story of Harrison Bergeron. In the left picture we see three people each standing on their same sized box. All three are different sizes. Because of the box, the tallest man can see over the fence at the baseball game, and the second tallest can too. Sadly the shortest person can not see the game. Then in the picture to the right there is the tallest man that has no box, but can still see the game. Then the man with the middle height has one box that so that he also sees the game. The theme of the “meaning of freedom” is a common theme between the two stories “A&P” by Updike, and Harrison Bergeron by Vonnegut. In both stories, the characters are take different routes to rebel from the standards of society. In A&P, gender roles are heavy, and Sammy is expected to conform, but he does otherwise by leaving his job. Harrison Bergeron takes place during a time where the human population is expected to be equal, but Harrison steps beyond these limits. These characters show that conforming to society truly does not make you free, in fact it holds you back from your full potential.
Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.
The conflict in this short story is fairly complex. It can probably be categorized as a person vs society conflict, due to Harrison defying the ‘normal’ of the society. Harrison defies the norm by being remarkably strong and intelligent. Any handicaps he has are useless, and this means he is dangerous to the government. This is shown in the story when he, “...tore the straps of his handicap harness like wet tissue paper, tore straps guaranteed to support five thousand pounds (Vonnegut 72).” He escapes after that, starting the climax of the story. The climax is when he and his Empress are dancing, and then when the Handicapper General enters and shoots them down. Harrison is rebelling against society, using his outstanding smarts and strength.
