The Harmandir Sahib is the inspirational and historical center of Sikhism. Also known as the Golden Temple it is a marvelous example of Indian architecture and Sikhism beliefs. Sikhism is a monotheistic religion founded in the 15th century by the fist Sikh guru, Guru Nanak. Sikhism is a progressive religion that believes in treating everyone as equals which is rare in many modern day religions. Sikhs are guided by the holy scripture of the Guru Granth Sahib. This religion is based on humility and equality, and denounces superstitions and rituals. The religion of Sikhism is constructed from selfless service and the practice of langar. This religion has many similarities with Hinduism, however, Sikhs reject the caste system in place in Hinduism. Sikhism is a monotheistic religion that believes in a single, formless God. It is important for Sikhs to build a personal, loving relationship with God. The practice of meditation is called Naam Japha and the only way to achieve salvation is to perform daily practice of meditation. To become a Sikh an individual must be baptized in the holy water of the Amritsar and avoid the five sins of ego. The five sins consist of lust, anger, greed, ego, and emotional attachment. Sikhs are prohibited from worshipping idols or icons because they should only be worshipping the one true God. Devotees are also forbidden from drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco. Sikh worshippers are expected to perform daily prayers multiple times a day from five different verses of the holy scripture the Adi Granth. The Reht Maryada is the Sikh code of conduct and it includes the belief in one immortal God, the teachings of the ten human Gurus, the Guru Granth Sahib and baptism. Sikhs believe in samsara which is the repetitive cycle of death and rebirth also known as reincarnation. Sikhism is similar to Hinduism because both religions believe in reincarnation and karma, however Sikhism believes all people are equal in God’s eyes and do not have a caste system. It is important for Sikhs to take part in fellowship and perform selfless service that is called seva.
