Shoeless Joe: He Was Terrible at Throwing Games “Shoeless” Joe Jackson is one of the best hitters of all time. To this day he has the third highest batting average of all time. He played in one of the hardest periods of baseball for a hitter, the Dead Ball Era. Yet, Joe Jackson is only widely known for his part in the Black Sox Scandal. He and seven other White Sox players were accused of purposefully losing in the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds for money from betters. Before his professional career Joe Jackson was born July 16, 1888, in Greenville, South Carolina (Asinof ¶1). Joe Jefferson Jackson was the first child of a family that would grow to include eight children (Joe’s ¶4). He didn’t receive an education because he started to work in a mill (Asinof ¶2). Quickly showing his skill in baseball, he became the youngest player his mill team had ever had (Asinof ¶2). Both Ted Williams and Bob Feller tried to convince Bud Selig, a recent commissioner of baseball, to reinstate Joe but he did not (Kaplan ¶1). Others argue that his sentence of a lifetime removal from the majors has been served, so he should be reinstated and therefore up for Hall of Fame voting (Kaplan ¶1).
