The identity that people often desired were neglected due to the lack of attention that they provided themselves which caused them to forget who they truly were. In the story, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello, are about self-identity and how people were more interested other than themselves. By owning a name, this allowed people to have an identity and also defined who people were rather than roles that only claimed what people did. Nonetheless, the first thing on his mind was about his job and was worried more about missing the bus to attend work rather than himself. In the text, Gregor says: “It’s a lot more stressful than the work in the home office, and along with everything else I also have to put with these agonies of traveling-worrying about making trains, having bad, irregular meals, meeting new people all the time…” (Kafka 118). Gregor was more concerned about missing work rather than accepting the fact that he had lost his form as a human being. But, he was not the only one who was concerned about his well-being, but his family as well. The problem was his family only viewed him as the money maker; without him, the family will likely be poor without his support. Gregor’s family relied on him to provided them since his salary helped them a lot due to his traveling as a sales person. Kafka writes, “‘Gregor,’ a voice called-it was his mother- ‘it’s a quarter to seven. Didn’t you have a train to catch?’” (Kafka 120). The mother was concerned about Gregor not leaving the house on time to go to work. Although, readers/audience may assume that the mother was performing her role as a mother and checking on her children. He had some knowledge of his identity as a human, but after his body changed into some vermin, he tried to re-evaluated who he was through the whole story. Although, Gregor did had a name and an identity, he still struggled throughout the story because he had to readjust becoming himself again and figuring out how life were like as some vermin compared to being a human. In Six Character, the family including the actors and directors did not have any identity, but the role in the play. The family were searching for an author that would give them a chance to actually be someone in the play. Pirandello did not give them names because it would ruin the purpose of the characters finding who they are. In the play, the father speaks, “In the sense, that is, that the author who created us, made us live, did not wish. Or simply and materially was not able, to place us in the world ever has the luck to be born a living character can also laugh at death…” (Pirandello 13). The father believed that people are characters that are born with a role and have to show their role to the world. That is why he is so determine to find a opportunity that would allow them to act out their experience in life and proved that they are more real than the
